Chapter 25 - The Secrets of the Sunken Vault

The air in the tugboat's cabin was so dense with tension that every breath felt like inhaling shattered glass. The laser sights remained steady on the blanket covering Lily, but as I looked down at my sleeping daughter, I noticed something that made my heart leap into my throat.
Lily wasn't asleep.
Her tiny hands were clutching the green piece of sea glass under the edge of the blanket, her eyes slit open, staring at me with the silent intelligence she had learned during the darkest months of our lives. She knew to stay still. She knew her daddy was waiting for the right moment.
"The encryption key isn't on a flash drive, Douglas," I said slowly, raising my hands in apparent defeat and taking a half-step forward. "My father was smarter than that. The vault at Berth 4 doesn't open with code. It opens with biometric resonance. It requires my blood, paired with a Delacroix heir."
Sterling frowned, glancing between me and Elena. "What do you mean, paired?"
"Arthur knew Victor might come back," I said, spinning the truth out of thin air, weaving the ultimate bluff. "He locked the hydraulic clamps with an enzymatic blood-lock designed by Zurich Bio-Tech in 1993. It requires an active Vance DNA sample mixed with a Delacroix sample. If Victor forces the doors with hydraulic cutters, the submerged compartment will flood with five thousand gallons of saltwater, crushing the structural seals and destroying every single bond and record inside."
Sterling hesitated. His tactical team shifted their weight, uncertain. They were hired guns; they didn't understand the eccentric paranoia of twentieth-century corporate barons.
"Call him," Elena chimed in, catching my drift with breathtaking precision. Her eyes were sharp, devoid of the shock from moments ago. "Call Victor right now on the satellite link. Tell him that if he cuts the steel at Berth 4 without us, he will get nothing but a drowned grave."
Sterling gritted his teeth, pulling an encrypted radio from his vest. "Victor. It’s Sterling. Ethan claims Berth 4 has a dual-strain biological seal. He says forcing the hatch will trigger a catastrophic flood protocol."
A long pause hung over the line, followed by the low, gravelly chuckle of Victor Vance. "Arthur was always an artist of paranoia. Bring them both down to the dry dock. Bring the child as insurance. If Ethan is telling the truth, he will open it for us. If he’s lying, I’ll feed them all to the harbor current."
"You heard him," Sterling said, gesturing with his pistol. "Move. And don't make a sound."
Ten minutes later, we were marched down a rusty iron spiral staircase deep beneath the concrete pilings of Berth 4. The sound of the Atlantic ocean thudded against the outer walls—a massive, rhythmic heartbeat of tons of cold water pressing against the concrete.
At the bottom of the shaft lay a colossal subterranean chamber, illuminated by portable halogen work lamps. In the center of the chamber was a massive vault door, ten feet in diameter, constructed from blackened naval armor steel, bearing the faded insignia of the 1990 Vance-Delacroix Consortium.
Standing before the vault, dressed in an immaculate charcoal wool coat over a tailored suit, was Victor Vance. Up close, the resemblance to my father was terrifying. It was like staring at Arthur Vance resurrected from the dead, but stripped of whatever warmth and conscience my father had possessed in his final years.
"Ethan," Victor greeted, spreading his arms wide like an emperor welcoming an errant son. "And Elena Delacroix. The daughter of the woman I loved, and the son of the brother who betrayed me. Isn't this poetic? A family reunion thirty years in the making."
"You murdered thirty-two crewmen on the North Sea platform to fake your death," I said, standing tall with Lily safely shielded behind Elena’s legs. "There’s no poetry here, Victor. Just an old monster crawling out of the dark."

Victor’s smile faded into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. "Your father was the monster, boy! He wanted Elena’s mother, he wanted the European trade routes, and he wanted the sovereign wealth of the Allied Maritime Fund! He sealed this vault, killed Genevieve, and left me to burn in the freezing North Sea! But I survived. I climbed through the ranks of the Tribunal. And tonight, I take back every ounce of blood I was owed."
He raised a heavy chrome revolver, pointing it directly at Elena’s heart. "Step up to the console, Ethan. Both of you. Open the vault, or watch me put a bullet through the woman you almost married."
