Chapter 15 - The Viper’s Last Pawn

The private medical suite at Vance Tower was sterile and quiet. Dr. Henderson finished tying off the four stitches in my left deltoid, shook his head in disapproval, and left the room under strict orders to keep the medical report classified.
Elena sat on the edge of the examination bed, holding a glass of water. Her designer dress was ruined, stained with grease and blood, but she had refused to leave my side even to change.
"The bullet didn't hit bone," I said, flexing my fingers to prove the joint was intact. "Marcus says the shooters were independent mercenaries. Julian is getting sloppy. He’s running out of time."
"He's desperate, Ethan," Elena said, her voice heavy with fatigue. "When men like Julian get desperate, they do unspeakable things. He tried to kill us in broad daylight."
The door opened, and Marcus stepped in, holding a digital tablet.
"Boss," Marcus said, looking Grim. "We tracked the burner phone found on one of the downed mercenaries. The hit was ordered forty minutes before the gala. But the authorization code didn't come from Julian."
I frowned, wincing slightly as I pulled on a clean black dress shirt. "What do you mean?"
"The authorization pinged off a cell tower in Queens. Specifically, the secure psychiatric wing of Bellevue Hospital."
Elena dropped her glass. It shattered against the tile floor.
"Vanessa," she gasped.
"Vanessa Sterling," Marcus confirmed. "She hasn't been sitting silently in detention. She was transferred to Bellevue’s medical ward three days ago claiming severe panic-induced psychosis. Her legal team used that transfer to bypass regular prison communications. She’s running communications between Julian and the street."
I grabbed my coat. "Marcus, prep the car."
"Ethan, you were shot two hours ago!" Elena protested, jumping to her feet, gripping my right arm. "You can't go to Bellevue!"
"Vanessa thought she could orchestrate a hit on you while playing the victim in a hospital bed," I said, cold fury radiating from my eyes. "It's time to show her what happens when you cut off a snake's head."
"I'm coming with you," Elena declared, her chin lifting with that same fierce, untamed courage that had saved my life at the altar.
I looked at her, seeing no maid, no victim, but a lioness ready to protect her cub.
"Get your coat," I said.
Thirty minutes later, flanked by federal marshals whose warrants I had personally accelerated through the State Attorney General’s office, we strode into the high-security wing of Bellevue.
Vanessa was sitting on a plush armchair in her private medical suite, wearing silk pajamas, sipping herbal tea. When the steel door slammed open, she looked up with an irritated scowl—until she saw me, followed closely by Elena.
Vanessa’s teacup rattled against the saucer.
"Ethan?" she stammered, her polished socialite mask cracking. "What is the meaning of this? I have a medical quarantine order—"
"Save it, Vanessa," I said, stepping up to her table and throwing the blood-stained silk scrap from my tuxedo right into her lap.
She flinched back in disgust. "What is that?"
"That’s my blood," I said, leaning down until my face was inches from hers. "Paid for by the three hundred thousand dollars transferred from your offshore account at 7:15 PM tonight to a mercenary broker in Newark."
Vanessa turned an ash-gray color. Her eyes darted frantically toward the door, where two armed federal marshals stood with handcuffs drawn.
"You're a monster, Vanessa," Elena said, stepping forward. Her voice was not loud, but it was steady, razor-sharp, carrying years of suppressed pain. "You used your family, you used Ethan, and you tried to murder a three-year-old child's mother just to keep your dirty fortune."
"You... you dirty little immigrant maid!" Vanessa shrieked, losing all composure, her manicured nails clawing at the armrests. "You think you won? Julian is going to butcher you! He is Lily's father! He has the legal paperwork! You are nothing! Nothing!"
"Actually, Vanessa," I said smoothly, pulling a sealed manila envelope from my coat pocket. "That's why I'm here."
I dropped the file onto her lap next to the blood-stained cloth.
"What is this?" she hissed.
"This is the unsealed grand jury indictment for high treason, conspiracy to commit murder, and human trafficking against Julian Cross," I explained coldly. "And this second document is a subpoena for every text, call, and encrypted signal transmitted from this room over the last seventy-two hours."
Vanessa’s breath hitched.
"Julian didn't care about you, Vanessa," I continued. "Marcus’s team just intercepted his private jet at Teterboro Airport. He wasn't waiting for you. He was preparing to flee to Dubai with forty million dollars of your father's liquidated assets. He sold you out forty-five minutes ago."
"Liar!" she screamed, tears of rage smudging her mascara. "He wouldn't!"
"Look at the flight manifest on page three," I said. "He had one ticket. One seat. And an offshore account transferring all liability for the hit tonight directly into your name."
Vanessa stared at the paper. The realization crashed into her like a freight train. She let out a guttural, wretched wail, collapsing forward against the table, her hands clutching her head as the federal marshals stepped in and clamped cold steel cuffs around her wrists.
"Ethan Vance!" she sobbed as they dragged her toward the door. "Ethan, please! Help me! He made me do it! Julian made me do it!"
I didn't even look back as they dragged her down the hall.

I took Elena’s hand in mine. "One down. One to go."
