Chapter 14 - Cold Steel and Warm Blood

The Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of black tuxedos, emerald gowns, and diamond necklaces. To the outside world, this was New York high society at its most benevolent—a fifty-thousand-dollar-a-plate charity dinner benefiting terminally ill children.
To me, it was a colosseum.
Elena stepped out of the private elevator at my side. She was breathtaking. I had bought her a midnight-blue silk gown that draped over her shoulders like starlight, her hair swept into an elegant chignon. But beneath the couture and the delicate diamond pendant I had placed around her neck, her hands were trembling.
"Hold my arm," I murmured as the ballroom doors swung open. "Keep your chin high. You belong in this room more than anyone here."
"They're staring, Ethan," she whispered, her knuckles whitening against my tuxedo sleeve.
"Let them stare. They are looking at the woman who saved the Vance empire."
Photographers’ flashes ignited like miniature lightning strikes as we entered. Elena Reyes was no longer an invisible maid; she was the mysterious woman who had brought down Vanessa Sterling and now stood openly beside Ethan Vance.
"Mr. Vance! Over here!"
"Is it true Elena Reyes was your housekeeper?"
"Are the rumors about Vanessa Sterling’s cartel ties accurate?"
I ignored the cacophony, guiding Elena through the sea of socialites toward the VIP lounge at the rear of the grand ballroom. Standing by the marble fireplace, holding a glass of vintage champagne, was Julian Cross.
He was tall, athletic, with silver-streaked dark hair and piercing gray eyes that exuded cold, calculated cruelty. Standing slightly behind him was Judge Harold Vance-Miller—a notoriously corrupt appellate judge who had long been suspected of dirty ties in southern Florida.
"Ethan," Julian said warmly, extending a manicured hand as if greeting an old college roommate. "You look magnificent. And Elena... motherhood has only made you more exquisite."
Elena recoiled, stepping behind my shoulder.
"Skip the pleasantries, Julian," I said, ignoring his outstretched hand. "You have five minutes to tell me what you want before Marcus removes you from this building."
Julian smiled thinly, sipping his champagne. "What I want is simple. I want my daughter. And I want the deep-water lease for Terminal 4."
"You won't get either," I said coldly.
"Oh, but I will," Julian replied, leaning forward, his voice dropping to a vicious whisper. "Judge Miller here has already signed an ex-parte emergency custody decree. Within twenty-four hours, child services and NYPD will arrive at your estate to transfer Lily to my custody. Elena will be arrested for felony custodial interference across state lines. She’ll face ten years in Rikers."
Elena gasped, a sound of pure agony.
"And if you hand over Terminal 4?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
"If you transfer forty-nine percent of the terminal shares to my holding company, I will drop the criminal charges against Elena. She can even visit Lily twice a month. Supervised, of course."
Julian chuckled, reaching out a hand toward Elena’s cheek. "A mother should always have some access to her child, don't you think?"
Before his finger could touch her skin, I caught his wrist.
The sound of bones groaning under pressure echoed between us. Julian’s smug expression twisted into sudden, sharp pain.
"Listen to me carefully, you miserable parasite," I snarled, stepping into his personal space, twisting his wrist until he was forced onto his tiptoes. "Lily is not a bargaining chip. Elena is not your victim anymore. If you file that court order, I will release the complete financial logs of Vanessa’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands—logs that trace five million dollars in illegal maritime bribes directly to your numbered accounts."
Julian’s face flushed purple with pain and shock. "You... you don't have those files. Vanessa wiped the drive!"
"Vanessa thought she wiped it," I whispered into his ear. "I built the servers, Julian. Nothing disappears on my network."
I shoved him backward. Julian stumbled against a high-top table, knocking a crystal champagne flute to the marble floor, where it shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.
Security guards rushed forward, but Julian held up a hand, his eyes burning with demonic fury.
"You've signed your death warrant, Vance," Julian hissed, rubbing his bruised wrist. "Both of you."
"We’re leaving," I told Elena, wrapping my arm firmly around her waist.
We turned and marched out of the ballroom, cutting through the stunned crowd of socialites and flashing cameras. But as we stepped into the private underground parking garage where our armored Maybach was idling, the lights suddenly flickered and died.
Total darkness swallowed the subterranean level.
"Marcus!" I roared, pushing Elena behind me.
A sharp *crack* echoed through the concrete space—the unmistakable sound of a suppressed gunshot.
A round sparked against the concrete pillar inches from my head.
"Ethan!" Elena screamed.
I tackled her to the floor behind the armored wheel of the Maybach as a hail of suppressed fire chewed into the luxury vehicles around us. Glass showered down like ice.
A burning agony ripped across my left shoulder. Warm, sticky blood immediately soaked through my tuxedo shirt.
"Ethan, you're hit!" Elena cried, her hands scrambling over my chest, frantic with terror.
"Stay down!" I growled, drawing my concealed Glock 19. "Marcus! Counter-ambush protocols! Now!"
Through the darkness, the thunder of Marcus’s assault team erupted. Flashes of muzzle fire lit up the garage like a war zone. Two masked gunmen fell near the exit ramp. The remaining attackers scrambled into an unmarked black van that screeched out into the Manhattan rain, tires smoking.
Silence slammed back down over the garage.
Elena was sobbing hysterically, ripping the silk hem of her designer gown with her bare hands, pressing the fabric desperately against my bleeding shoulder.
"Ethan, please, please don't die, please don't leave us—"
I reached up with my uninjured hand, cupping her tear-streaked face. "Elena... look at me. I’m fine. It's just a graze."
"You took a bullet for me," she sobbed, pressing her forehead against mine, her tears mixing with the blood on my collar. "Why would you do that? Why would you risk everything for us?"
"Because you and Lily aren't just people I’m protecting," I panted, my voice thick with emotion. "You're my family, Elena. And I’d take ten more bullets before I let anyone tear us apart."
May you like
She froze, looking into my eyes through the darkness. In that blood-soaked parking garage, beneath the sirens wailing in the distance, Elena leaned down and pressed her lips to mine—a kiss born of fear, fire, and an undeniable, unyielding love.
