Chapter 33 - The Scent of Betrayal

The old priest's words hung in the subterranean air like poison gas.

"What did you just say?" My voice dropped to a register colder than the catacombs themselves. I stepped forward, closing the distance between myself and the altar, the muzzle of my suppressed pistol clearing my jacket and pressing squarely against Father Matteo’s wrinkled forehead.

The priest didn't flinch. He merely smiled, his milky eyes staring blindly into the shadows. "Victor knew he was marked for death from the moment he broke away from the Levantine Compass. When Lily was born, she was not just an heir, Ethan. Her medical identification chip, implanted during her infancy in Geneva, contains the encrypted algorithmic key to the Swiss shadow reserves of the Order."

Elena gasped softly behind me. Her mind, razor-sharp and intuitive, connected the pieces in an instant. "That’s why Victor fought so desperately for custody. It wasn’t about blood. It wasn't even about pride. He needed Lily's biometric presence to unlock the Sovereign Reserve."

"And now," Father Matteo whispered, "the Compass has come to harvest their investment."

A sharp whistle echoed from the ceiling shafts above the crypt.

"Ethan, move!" Elena screamed, lunging forward and tackling me to the stone floor just as a hail of suppressed automatic fire chewed through the sarcophagus where the priest sat.

Father Matteo collapsed without a sound, his black rosary scattering across the damp flagstones.

Four armed operators in tactical combat gear dropped down from the ventilation shafts, their night-vision goggles glowing like demonic green eyes in the shadows. They moved with mechanical precision, weapons raised to eliminate us.

Elena didn't hesitate. Rolling across the cobblestones, she raised her ceramic weapon and fired three rapid shots. Two rounds shattered the visor of the point-man; he dropped instantly with a heavy clatter of Kevlar.

I scrambled to my feet, using the overturned stone coffin as cover, returning fire with measured, deadly double-taps. The claustrophobic crypt erupted into chaos—flashes of muzzle fire illuminating ancient skulls embedded in the stone walls, the scent of cordite mingling with ancient dust.

"Rear exit!" I yelled, grabbing Elena’s tactical vest and pulling her backward down an arched corridor toward the aqueduct tunnels.

"They were waiting for us!" Elena breathed heavily, reloading her magazine with practiced muscle memory as we sprinted through the dark, subterranean water splashing around our boots. "They knew we would follow the token!"

"Which means there is a leak in our inner circle," I ground out, my teeth clenched so tight my jaw ached.

Suddenly, my tactical comms unit vibrated violently in my ear. Marcus's frantic, broken transmission cut through the static:

*“Base command to Vance! Boss, do you copy? We have a breach! I repeat, we have a breach at the Amalfi estate! The secondary grid was disabled from the inside! They’re inside the villa—they’re going for the safe room!”*

May you like

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. My blood ran ice cold.

"Marcus!" I roared into the radio, my voice echoing off the ancient stone aqueducts. "Hold that door with your life! We’re coming!"
