Chapter 27 - The Sovereign Protocol

The lever slammed down with a resounding metallic clang.
Instantly, red strobe lights erupted along the vaulted ceiling, bathing the subterranean chamber in a horrific crimson glow. An ear-splitting siren pierced the damp air:
*WARNING: STRUCTURAL COMPROMISE DETECTED. SCUTTLING CHARGES ARMED. DETONATION IN SIXTY SECONDS.*
"You fool!" Victor screamed, wiping the blood from his cheek with the back of his hand, raising his weapon again. "You’ve killed us all!"
Elena didn't hesitate. With lightning speed, she drew her concealed backup pistol from her ankle holster and fired two rounds straight through the forearm of the mercenary guarding Sterling. The man dropped his submachine gun with a howl of agony.
I lunged forward, tackling Victor to the ground before he could realign his sights on Elena and Lily. We crashed onto the hard concrete, wrestling violently for control of the heavy revolver. Despite his age, Victor possessed a terrifying, wire-like strength fueled by decades of bitter hatred.
"You will die here, Ethan!" Victor snarled, slamming his elbow into my jaw, sending a metallic burst of blood across my teeth. "Arthur took everything from me, and you will pay his debt!"
"My father is dead!" I shouted back, driving my knee into his ribs and twisting his wrist with both hands until the bone snapped with a sickening crack. The revolver clattered across the wet floor, sliding into the darkness beneath the vault threshold.
Victor screamed in fury, clutching his broken wrist.
*DETONATION IN THIRTY SECONDS.*
"Ethan, the stairs!" Elena yelled, scooping Lily into one arm while using her free hand to keep Sterling pinned behind an iron girder. "The charges are going to rupture the bulkhead!"
"Sterling! Get the cases!" Victor roared, scrambling to his feet like a cornered animal, lunging toward the open vault door. "Don't let them leave with the master key!"
Sterling, blinded by terror and greed, grabbed one of the titanium cases from the pallet, but as he turned to run toward the spiral staircase, the first scuttling charge detonated in the northern wall.
The explosion was deafening. The entire subterranean chamber buckled violently. Concrete slabs weighing thousands of pounds shattered into dust as an avalanche of black Atlantic ocean water roared through the breach like a raging beast.
The torrent struck Sterling instantly, smashing him against the iron support beam with the force of a freight train. The titanium case was ripped from his grip, swallowed by the churning vortex.
"Lily! Hold on to Mommy!" Elena screamed as the freezing water surged around our ankles, rising to our knees in seconds.
I sprinted toward Elena, wrapping my right arm around both her and Lily, using my body to anchor them against the raging current. "To the emergency escape hatch! The service elevator shaft at the south corner!"
"What about Victor?" Elena shouted through the roaring deluge.
I looked back. Victor Vance stood knee-deep in the rising flood, frantically trying to drag the remaining titanium cases out of the vault. The water was rising past his chest. The sea wall was collapsing above him in massive chunks of iron and stone. He looked up, catching my eyes through the roaring spray of water.
In that final moment, I saw the truth: Victor Vance was not a man; he was a ghost bound to this tomb by his own unquenchable greed.
"Victor! Leave it!" I shouted, holding out a hand despite everything he had done. "The shaft will hold! You can survive this!"
Victor looked at my outstretched hand, then down at the cases sinking into the black abyss of Berth 4. A bitter, monstrous laugh tore from his lips.
"A Vance never surrenders his harbor, Ethan!" he yelled above the roar of the ocean.
With a final, catastrophic rumble, the entire overhead concrete ceiling collapsed, burying the vault and Victor Vance beneath hundreds of tons of rubble and millions of gallons of seawater.

"Ethan, move!" Elena cried, tears mixing with the salt spray on her face.
I turned and pushed Elena and Lily into the narrow service elevator shaft just as the water level reached our chins. I slammed the watertight pressure hatch shut behind us, dogging the steel levers with every ounce of strength left in my battered body.
