Chapter 17 - The Vault of Secrets

The double doors of the penthouse library swung open with violent force.

Julian Cross strode in, flanked by two armed NYPD sergeants and a stern-faced woman holding a clipboard from Child Protective Services. Julian was dressed in a charcoal Brioni suit, smiling with arrogant triumph.

"Ethan Vance," Julian declared, spreading his hands theatrically. "I believe you have something that belongs to me. Sergeants, secure the child."

The two officers took a hesitant step forward, clearly uncomfortable with entering a billionaire’s private residence, but bound by the court order in their hands.

"Stop right there," Pendelton’s booming baritone cut through the room like a whip.

"On what grounds?" Julian sneered. "I have an emergency order signed by Judge Vance-Miller."

"An order signed by a judge who was arrested twenty minutes ago by the FBI for accepting a two-hundred-thousand-dollar wire transfer from an account registered to your alias in the Caymans," Pendelton replied smoothly, handing a signed federal warrant to the lead sergeant.

The sergeant took the document, his eyes bulging as he read the federal seal. He immediately stepped back, resting his hand on his duty belt, eyeing Julian with sudden suspicion.

"What is this nonsense?" Julian barked, his face darkening. "I am her father! You cannot override parental rights with corporate slander!"

"Parental rights require paternity, Julian," I said, stepping between him and Elena.

I towered over him, my presence filling the space between us with suffocating authority.

"You aren't her father," I said, each word landing like a sledgehammer. "You are a barren, sterile fraud who kidnapped a pregnant woman to steal fifty million dollars from your family’s dead estate."

Julian’s eyes went completely wild. "That's impossible. Those medical records were expunged!"

"Nothing is expunged when Ethan Vance buys the server farm where your records were archived," I replied with a cold smirk.

The woman from Child Protective Services gasped, snatching the certified medical records Pendelton offered her. "Mr. Cross... is this true? Are you sterile?"

"It's a forgery!" Julian snarled, lunging forward toward Elena. "Give me that child! Elena, give her to me or I will butcher every single person in this room!"

"Step back!" the sergeant roared, drawing his taser and aiming it straight at Julian’s chest. "Step back right now!"

Julian froze. He looked around the room, realizing in a terrifying flash that every card he had played had been countered, every trap dismantled.

Elena stood up, holding Lily high on her hip. She walked straight up to Julian, stopping just inches from his reach, her eyes blazing with absolute disdain.

"You took my youth," Elena said, her voice ringing like a bronze bell. "You took my freedom for two years. You made me hide in closets and scrub floors in the dark. But you will never, ever touch my daughter again. You are nothing to us, Julian. You are less than dust."

Lily pointed her tiny finger at Julian’s furious face. "Go away, bad man!" she shouted in her small, clear voice. "Mr. Ethan has the castle!"

Julian’s face contorted into something subhuman. He lunged his hand into his coat pocket—

*ZAP.*

The sergeant fired his taser. Fifty thousand volts surged through Julian Cross’s body. He let out a strangled shriek, his limbs locking as he collapsed heavily onto the marble floor, twitching helplessly like a dying insect.

The second officer pinned him to the ground, pulling a concealed Glock from Julian’s inner pocket before wrenching his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.

"Julian Cross," the sergeant growled, pressing Julian’s face against the stone. "You are under arrest for attempted kidnapping, federal fraud, and attempted murder."

As they hauled the thrashing, cursing criminal toward the elevator, the heavy doors slid shut, cutting off his screams forever.

Silence descended upon the penthouse.

Elena collapsed into my arms, burying her face into my chest, soaking my shirt with tears of unadulterated relief. I wrapped both arms around her and Lily, holding them as tightly as the world allowed.

"It's over, Elena," I murmured into her hair. "They're gone. All of them."

She pulled back, looking into my eyes, her face radiant despite the tears. "Is it really over, Ethan?"

May you like

"No," I smiled softly, wiping away a stray tear with my thumb. "Our life is just beginning."
