Chapter 42 - The Unfinished Ledger

Silence descended once more upon the abandoned timber mill, save for the relentless howling of the blizzard outside and the heavy, ragged breathing of Marcus as he was hauled roughly to his feet by the federal marshals.
Sarah walked briskly across the concrete floor, her boots crunching on the debris, and stopped beside my wheelchair. She looked down at me, her chest heaving slightly from the adrenaline rush, her eyes filled with a mixture of profound relief and lingering tension.
"Are you alright, Evelyn?" she asked, her voice softening as she checked my arms and neck for injuries.
"I've survived a freezing lake, a corporate coup, and my own flesh and blood trying to throw me off a loading dock," I replied, adjusting my collar with a steady, unshakeable hand. "A little dust isn't going to break me, Sarah."
Across the room, Marcus was being pushed toward the exit, his face bruised and bleeding, his eyes burning with a venomous, unrepentant hatred as he glared back at me over his shoulder.
"You haven't won, Grandmother," Marcus shouted above the howling wind as the agents shoved him toward the armored transport waiting outside. "The Zurich trust is locked with a multi-signature blockchain key! Without my private decryption code, the billions are frozen forever! You'll never touch a dime of the Vance empire!"
Sarah frowned, turning to me as the heavy metal doors closed behind the marshals and Marcus. "He’s right about the blockchain key, Evelyn. If he refuses to surrender the private key, the remaining assets will remain locked in a digital vault indefinitely. The empire is legally paralyzed."
I looked toward the heavy iron doors where my grandson had just been dragged out into the snowstorm. I let out a slow, deliberate breath, feeling the weight of the past thirty-two chapters lift from my shoulders, replaced by the cold, calculating clarity of a woman who had fought her way back from the bottom of the lake.
"Let him keep his digital vault for now," I said quietly, turning my wheelchair toward the exit with a faint, enigmatic smile. "A prison cell has a way of loosening even the most stubborn tongues."
Sarah nodded slowly, her expression turning pensive as she followed me out into the blinding white storm. "What's our next move, Evelyn?"

I looked past the snow-covered ridge toward the distant lights of the Vance estate gleaming faintly through the blizzard, knowing that while the immediate battle was won, the true war for the dynasty was only just entering its final, most dangerous phase.
"We go back to the estate," I said, my voice cutting through the wind like steel. "And we wait for my son Richard to realize he was just a pawn in his own son's game..."
