Chapter 13 - The Boardroom Aftermath

The heavy thud of the oak front door echoing through the manor still hung in the air, a physical manifestation of the seismic shift that had just occurred. Sarah stood frozen against the hallway wall, her knuckles white where she gripped the hem of her cardigan. Outside, the fading roar of the black SUVs accelerating down the gravel driveway was the only sound breaking the mountain silence.

"Evelyn," Sarah breathed again, her voice trembling as she pushed herself off the wall and took a hesitant step toward the study. "Do you realize what you just did? Julian Vance is not a man who accepts defeat. You stripped him of his controlling stake in Vance Industries. That's billions of dollars, decades of family legacy, wiped out with the stroke of a silver tablet."

I turned slowly from the window, the morning light catching the sharp angles of my face. The wheelchair felt different beneath me now—not as a symbol of confinement, but as a throne. "Sarah, do you think I spent the last ten years in this chair, watching them bleed my accounts dry and plot my quiet, convenient death in the frozen mud of Lake Minnetonka, just to negotiate a settlement?"

"No, but—"

"Julian was the front man," I interrupted, my voice dropping to a low, chilling register. "He was the executioner of the physical act, the arrogant golden boy who thought a million-dollar payout to a shivering old woman was the cost of doing business. But Vance Industries wasn't built by Julian. It was built on secrets. Dark, buried secrets that go far deeper than corporate embezzlement."

Sarah walked over to the mahogany desk, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and awe. "What secrets? The federal prosecutors you mentioned—did you actually have evidence, or was that a bluff?"

I smiled, tapping the worn leather portfolio that lay beside me. "A general never enters a battlefield without knowing where the enemy hides their ammunition, Sarah. Julian thinks the game is over because he signed over the company shares. He thinks he can run to Duluth, lick his wounds, and plan his revenge from the shadows. But he forgets one crucial detail."

"What detail?"

"Derek," I said softly.

At the mention of her fiancé’s name, Sarah flinched. Derek Vance, Julian’s cousin and my so-called loving son, was currently sitting in a holding cell, sweating through an orange jumpsuit while waiting for his arraignment. He believed Julian was orchestrating his rescue, buying off judges, and spinning a narrative of tragic maternal dementia. He had no idea that Julian had just abandoned him to save his own skin.

"If Julian fled to Duluth," Sarah reasoned, her analytical mind quickly catching up, "he's abandoning Derek completely. He’s cutting off the weak limb to save the body."

"Exactly," I said, wheeling myself toward the desk. "And when Derek realizes he’s been sold out by the golden boy he worshiped... the family dynamic is going to fracture into a thousand razor-sharp pieces. Pull up the laptop, Sarah. It’s time to see how fast a billion-dollar empire turns on itself when the wolves smell blood."
