Chapter 31 - The Final Signature

"Go ahead," I said.

The words dropped into the cavernous silence of the chapel like a lead weight hitting ice. Richard froze, his finger hovering over the red detonator button. Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief, her grip on her silver cane tightening until her knuckles turned bone-white.

"What did you say?" Richard hissed, taking a step forward over the balcony railing, his voice cracking with sudden uncertainty. "You think I'm bluffing? Look around you, mother! Look at the explosives strapped to those stone arches! You're in a wheelchair, in the middle of a blizzard, on top of a mountain with no backup! You have nothing left!"

"You're right, Richard," I replied calmly, rolling my wheelchair forward until I was parked directly beside the marble altar where Helen lay trembling. I reached out, gently taking my daughter’s cold, thin hand in mine, feeling the faint, fluttering pulse beneath her skin. "I lost my husband to greed. I lost decades of my life to the illusions you all manufactured. And you took my son Jonathan and twisted him into a monster just to execute your dirty work."

I slowly lifted my head, locking my eyes directly onto Richard’s terrified gaze high above on the balcony. "I don't have anything left to lose. But *you* still have millions of dollars tied up in a system that will permanently self-destruct if you don't get both biometric signatures within the next ninety seconds."

Victoria stepped to the front of the balcony, her face twisted in rage. "Richard, don't listen to her! She's bluffing! She loves her life too much to let it all go up in smoke!"

"Am I?" I tilted my head, smiling as Sarah reached into her tactical pocket and pulled out a small, heavily encrypted override device—the exact same terminal unit we had pulled from the Minneapolis boardroom earlier that morning.

Sarah plugged the device directly into the biometric port on Helen’s altar, and the screens above us instantly flared to life, flashing a bright, pulsing red countdown timer: **01:45... 01:44... 01:43...**

"What... what is that?!" Richard screamed, pointing his remote frantically as he realized what we were doing. "What did you just plug into the system?!"

"It's the *Project Phoenix* counter-protocol," Sarah answered loudly, her finger resting firmly on the enter key of the portable terminal. "The moment that timer hits zero, the main servers in Zurich, Geneva, and the Cayman Islands will automatically execute a total corporate wipe. Every single penny the Vances stole over the last thirty years won't go to your Swiss accounts—it will be permanently redistributed to public state charities and federal anti-corruption funds."

"No! No, you bitch!" Richard vaulted over the balcony railing, grabbing onto the heavy velvet drapery and sliding down fifty feet to the stone floor below with a heavy thud, sprinting down the center aisle toward us like a madman, his remote raised high. "Give me the override code! Give it to me now or I swear I'll blow us all straight to hell!"

"Richard, stop!" Victoria shrieked from above, but it was too late. He was already upon us, his hand lunging out to grab Sarah by the collar.

Before Richard’s fingers could touch Sarah, the heavy side doors of the chapel blew wide open with an explosive crash of splintering oak and flying snow.

Through the blinding blizzard light stepped a dozen heavily armed federal tactical agents in full riot gear, their assault rifles raised, laser sights painting a dozen glowing red dots squarely across Richard’s chest.

And right behind them, stepping through the snow with handcuffs dangling from his belt, was someone none of us expected to ever see outside a federal holding cell.
