Chapter 22 - The Siege of the Ridge

The sound of heavy tactical boots swarming the front porch was unmistakable. Within seconds, the sharp, authoritative commands of federal agents echoed through the grand foyer: *"Federal Marshals! Nobody move! Clear the perimeter!"*
Jonathan spun around toward the study door, his hand instinctively dropping toward his inner jacket pocket where a concealed firearm rested. But before his fingers could even graze the holster, the door was kicked wide open with an explosive crash.
Three heavily armed tactical agents flooded the room, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painting a constellation of red dots across Jonathan’s chest and shoulders.
"Hands on your head! Do it now! Down on the knees!" the lead agent roared, his voice leaving zero room for argument.
Jonathan stood frozen for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting between the rifles trained on him and the open secure console on my desk where the federal upload progress bar hit exactly 100%. Realizing he was completely checkmated, a dark, bitter laugh escaped his throat. He slowly raised his hands, interlocking his fingers behind his head, and dropped heavily to his knees on the Persian rug.
As the agents swarmed him, snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists and hauling him roughshod to his feet, Jonathan turned his head one last time to look at me over his shoulder.
"You think this stops with me, Evelyn?" Jonathan sneered, blood dripping from a small cut on his lip as the agents shoved him toward the exit. "The foundation... the board... the entire board of directors knew I was coming tonight. They’re voting at dawn to dissolve the company entirely. Even if you win the shell, there won't be anything left to govern!"
He was dragged out into the hallway, his defiant laughter echoing against the stone walls until the heavy front door slammed shut, cutting him off.
Silence rushed back into the study, heavy and oppressive, broken only by the crackle of the fireplace and the steady hum of the computer terminal.
Sarah sank heavily into the chair, letting out a long, breathless laugh that bordered on hysteria. "He... he actually thought he could outsmart you. But the board... Evelyn, what did he mean about the board voting to dissolve the company at dawn?"
I wheeled myself slowly toward the window, watching the tail lights of the federal vans disappear down the winding mountain road through the driving rain.
"Julian is gone. Victoria is broken. Jonathan is in cuffs," I said, my voice quiet but laced with an unyielding steel. "The board thinks that by dissolving the corporate shell, they can erase their sins and walk away with their personal fortunes intact."
"Can they?" Sarah asked, standing up and walking over to my side.
I turned my wheelchair around, looking up at Sarah with a fierce, burning light in my eyes that illuminated the entire room.
"Not if we strike first," I said, tapping the screen where a final, highly classified digital folder—labeled *Project Phoenix*—began to blink in the system tray. "Call the emergency board meeting for 5:00 AM. It’s time to take absolute, unchallengeable control of every single cent the Vances ever stole."

Sarah stared at the screen, her breath catching in her throat as she realized what was coming next. "Evelyn... what’s in that folder?"
Before I could answer, the master clock on the wall chimed three times, signaling the deep, dark hours before dawn—and the phone on the desk suddenly began to ring with an unknown, encrypted caller ID that none of us were prepared for...
