Chapter 23 - The 5:00 AM Execution

The encrypted phone on the mahogany desk continued its rhythmic, piercing shriek, cutting through the heavy silence of the mountain study like a scalpel. Sarah stood frozen, her eyes darting from the flashing amber light of the terminal to the receiver. The grandfather clock in the corner chimed thrice more, the metallic echoes sounding less like a measure of time and more like a countdown to an execution.

"Answer it," I commanded, my voice flat, devoid of the trembling frailty my son Julian had expected when he wheeled me toward the freezing lake months ago. Back then, they thought an old woman in a wheelchair was nothing more than an inconvenient hurdle standing between them and an eleven-million-dollar inheritance. They thought the dark, icy waters of the Minnesota quarry would swallow my voice forever. They were wrong. The cold didn't kill me; it forged me into something infinitely harder.

Sarah swallowed hard, her hand trembling slightly as she reached out and pressed the speakerphone button.

"Vance Holdings emergency communications line," a synthesized voice crackled through the static, distorted by military-grade encryption software. "State your clearance code, authorization level, and current operational status."

I wheeled myself forward, planting my palms firmly on the edge of the desk, leaning directly into the microphone. "Clearance level: Omega-Zero-Prime. Authorization: Evelyn Vance, Founder and Principal Beneficiary. Operational status: Hostile takeover initiated."

A sharp intake of breath echoed on the other end of the line. The heavy, mechanical breathing of whoever was hiding behind the proxy server suddenly hitched. "Mrs... Mrs. Vance? The board... the emergency board members are currently gathering at the Minneapolis headquarters. They received an anonymous mandate to dissolve the corporate shell by sunrise. If you aren't physically present or legally represented by 5:01 AM, the assets transfer automatically to offshore accounts controlled by..."

"Controlled by my treacherous grandson and his corporate accomplices," I finished for him, a cold smile touching the corners of my lips. "They think they can erase a thirty-year empire with the stroke of a pen. Tell me, Detective Vance—or should I say, Mr. Miller, head of corporate compliance—do you enjoy playing with fire?"

Silence stretched over the encrypted line, heavy enough to choke on. Miller was supposed to be our internal ally, but greed is a slippery disease.

"Evelyn," Miller's voice finally dropped the robotic distortion, sounding desperate and ragged. "You don't understand what you're walking into. The board has armed guards. They’ve locked down the entire seventeenth floor. If you try to execute *Project Phoenix* now, they’ll declare you legally incompetent before you even reach the boardroom doors. They have forged medical records claiming your cognitive decline..."

"Let them try," I interrupted, my gaze fixed on Sarah, who was already typing furiously on her laptop, executing the pre-dawn directives. "Sarah, patch in the federal marshals we stationed outside the perimeter. Tell them the warrant for corporate fraud and attempted murder is no longer pending—it's active, immediate, and non-bailable."

Sarah’s fingers danced across the mechanical keyboard, a fierce grin breaking through her pale face. "Marshals are in position, Evelyn. The armored convoy just breached the estate gates. They're waiting for our signal to move on the Minneapolis tower."

May you like

"Good," I said, leaning back into my leather seat as the first pale streaks of gray light began to bleed through the rain-streaked windowpanes, signaling the arrival of dawn. "Let's go greet our board of directors."
