Chapter 20 - The Patriarch Returns

The heavy iron-reinforced doors of the mansion’s lower foyer groaned under a sudden, heavy knock—not the polite rapping of a visitor, but the authoritative pounding of a man who believed he owned the earth beneath his feet.

Before Sarah could run to the intercom, the front door’s electronic locks clicked, bypassed by an override code so old and deeply embedded in the mansion's architecture that only the original founding brothers knew it.

The heavy oak door swung wide open.

Jonathan Vance stepped into the grand hallway, water dripping from his dark trench coat onto the marble floor. He didn't look like a man in his late sixties; he radiated an aura of terrifying vitality and absolute control. Two armed men in unmarked tactical gear flanked him, their weapons held at low-ready, scanning the shadows with practiced military precision.

Jonathan unbuttoned his coat, tossed it carelessly onto the nearest antique chair, and walked straight toward the study with the unhurried stride of a king returning to an abandoned throne.

I sat motionless behind the mahogany desk, my hands resting calmly on the armrests of my wheelchair, waiting for him. Sarah stood defensively beside me, her hands clenched into fists.

The study door pushed open wide. Jonathan paused on the threshold, his dark eyes sweeping over the room before locking directly onto mine. A slow, thin smile crept across his weathered face.

"Well, well, well," Jonathan said, his voice deep, gravelly, and dripping with an unsettling amusement. "They told me the old lady in the wheelchair was losing her grip, that the boys had finally managed to put her out to pasture. But here you are, holding fifty-one percent of Vance Industries, having just shipped Julian off to federal prison and forced Victoria to sign away her life."

He walked further into the room, ignoring Sarah entirely, and stopped just a few feet from my desk.

"You haven't changed a bit, Evelyn," Jonathan continued, leaning slightly forward, resting his palms on the wood. "Still playing chess while everyone else is playing with knives."

"And you, Jonathan," I replied, my voice steady and cold as ice, "still hiding in the shadows like a coward, waiting for someone else to do the dirty work before you try to sweep up the pieces."

Jonathan’s smile didn't fade, but his eyes hardened into chips of obsidian. "A coward? Evelyn, I built the international infrastructure that made Vance Industries a global superpower while my brother Arthur was busy playing the saint. And when Arthur decided to ruin everything with his pathetic moral compass—trying to expose our foreign accounts to the SEC—it wasn't just Julian's father who cleaned up the mess. I orchestrated the whole thing."

Sarah gasped, taking a sharp step forward. "You... you killed Arthur? You killed your own brother?"

Jonathan didn't even glance at Sarah. His gaze remained fixed entirely on me, a twisted expression of dark admiration crossing his face. "Arthur was a liability. Just like Julian. Just like Derek. Weakness has no place in the Vance bloodline, Evelyn. And that brings me to why I'm here."

I didn't flinch. I tilted my chin up, meeting his predatory gaze without a hint of fear. "Spit it out, Jonathan. I don't have time for a family reunion."

"You hold fifty-one percent of the voting shares," Jonathan said, his voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial whisper. "But you don't have the cryptographic master key to the offshore holding accounts in the Cayman Islands—the accounts that actually fund the entire corporation. Without that key, Vance Industries is just an empty shell sitting on a mountain of debt. And guess who holds the key?"

He reached slowly into his inner coat pocket, pulled out a small, heavy titanium flash drive etched with the exact same falcon emblem, and dropped it onto the desk with a heavy, metallic thud.

May you like

"Let's make a deal, sister-in-law," Jonathan whispered, a dangerous glint in his eye. "You sign over operational control of the foundation to me... and I won't burn what's left of this empire to the ground."
