Chapter 8 - The Siege at the Hudson Estate

The safehouse had been compromised.
Vance had traced our emergency extraction route from the Plaza, mobilizing forty mercenary fighters to launch a final, suicidal assault on the Hudson Valley estate. They knew Adrien had brought his wounded wife here; they knew this was the heart of the empire.
"He wants to burn the house down with us inside," Matteo said, slamming a fresh magazine into his rifle as we stood in the reinforced reinforced panic bunker beneath the wine cellar.
The walls shuddered as heavy mortars detonated against the estate’s outer perimeter. The lights flickered, surviving on backup generators.
"Elena stays in the inner vault," Adrien ordered, strapping on a tactical harness. He loaded a customized Benelli M4 shotgun with ruthless efficiency. "Matteo, you take the southern breezeway. Cut off their retreat toward the river. I take the main hall."
"Adrien, no," I said, stepping off the bunker cot, grabbing his arm. "Don't go out there. The bunker is impenetrable. We can wait for the state police—"
"The state police work for whoever pays them last," Adrien interrupted gently, turning to cup my face in his hands. He leaned down and pressed a deep, bruising kiss to my lips—a kiss filled with five years of love, regret, and unbroken promise. "Vance doesn't leave this property alive, Elena. Not after he threatened my family. Not after he threatened our child."
He slid my wedding ring back onto my left finger. It was warm from his pocket.
"Keep it on," he murmured against my mouth. "I’ll be back for breakfast. And I promise not to burn the eggs."
Before I could beg him to stay, the heavy vault door slammed shut, the electronic locks sealing with three heavy, hydraulic clangs.
I was locked inside the subterranean sanctuary with only Nora and a communications console.
Above us, the war began.
The muffled thuds of explosions reverberated through the reinforced concrete. The surveillance monitors flickered to life, showing the horrifying reality of the battle upstairs.
Men in tactical gear breached the foyer, shattering the century-old stained glass windows. But Adrien was waiting.
He moved through his ancestral halls like the angel of death. Every shot was lethal, every maneuver precise. Alongside Matteo, they dismantled Vance’s assault team piece by piece, turning the luxurious estate into a slaughterhouse of smoke, lead, and retribution.
Then, on monitor three, I saw him.
Lucian Vance.
He had bypassed the main hall, slipping through the servant corridors with three heavily armed men, heading directly for the cellar stairs. Heading for the bunker.
"Elena," Nora gasped, pointing at the screen. "They’re right outside."
My blood ran cold.
On the monitor outside the vault door, Vance stepped into view. He looked disheveled, bleeding from a shrapnel wound on his temple, holding a detonation pack wired to C4 charges.
"Moretti!" Vance’s voice echoed through the intercom system. "Open the vault, or I blow the support pillars and bury your little whore under fifty tons of granite!"
I stepped toward the intercom, my heart in my throat.
Before I could press the button, the shadow behind Vance moved.
Adrien appeared at the end of the stone hallway like a phantom born of the smoke. His shotgun was gone; he held only a blackened combat blade and a sidearm.
Vance spun around, raising his detonator, but Adrien fired twice through Vance’s right shoulder, sending the trigger skittering across the stone floor.
The two remaining mercenaries opened fire. Adrien took a bullet to his side, stumbling, but closed the distance with terrifying velocity. Within seconds, the hallway was cleared of Vance’s men.
Vance lay on the floor, clutching his shattered shoulder, crawling backward as Adrien towered over him, bleeding heavily from his abdomen.
"You should have stayed in exile, Lucian," Adrien rasped, his voice dripping with venom.
"You think killing me ends it?" Vance spat, coughing blood. "Your empire is poison, Moretti! You'll never be clean! She'll always look at you and see blood!"
Adrien didn't hesitate. He raised his weapon.
"She looks at me and sees her husband," Adrien said.
A single gunshot echoed through the speakers. Then, silence.
Adrien collapsed against the stone wall, sliding down to the floor, leaving a smear of dark crimson against the stone.
May you like
"Adrien!" I screamed, slamming my hands against the vault release button.
