Chapter 15 - The Ball of Ghosts

The private clinic in Livorno was hidden beneath an innocent-looking maritime import warehouse, fortified and operated by a retired military surgeon who owed his life to Adrien’s father.
For twelve hours, I lay on an examination table, an ultrasound wand gliding over my stomach while an IV drip hydrated my exhausted body. Adrien never left my side. He sat in a metal chair, still in his blood-stained shirt, holding my hand so tightly my fingers were numb.
"The baby is strong, Signora Hudson," Doctor Bianchi announced in Italian, smiling softly as the rapid, rhythmic thump-thump-thump of our daughter's heartbeat filled the sterile room. "The placenta is intact. But your blood pressure is dangerously high. Complete bed rest is non-negotiable. Another shock like this, and you will enter premature labor."
I closed my eyes, letting out a ragged breath of relief, while Adrien bowed his head, kissing the back of my hand repeatedly, his shoulders shaking with silent emotion.
"Thank you, Doctor," Adrien murmured.
Once the doctor stepped out, Marco entered the room, his face grim. "Julian and Vanessa survived the cave collapse. Satellite tracking caught them arriving in Monaco this morning."
Adrien raised his head, all tenderness instantly vanishing from his features. "Monaco? Why Monaco?"
"Tonight is the annual Solitaire Gala at the Casino de Monte-Carlo," Marco replied, handing Adrien an encrypted tablet. "It’s the neutral-ground summit for the Mediterranean syndicates. Julian is meeting with the heads of the Corsican Cartel and the Camorra. He’s going to pitch the unified syndicate, using the Moretti and Cole capital to buy their allegiance."
"If they back him, he controls every port from Gibraltar to Sicily," Adrien said coldly. "He becomes untouchable."
"Then we strike him there," Marco said.
"No," Adrien countered, his eyes narrowing. "The Solitaire Gala is sovereign neutral territory. Weapons are banned by syndicate treaty. If anyone draws blood inside the Grand Salon, all five families unite to butcher the aggressor."
I pushed myself up onto my elbows, ignoring the dull ache in my pelvis. "Then what are you going to do?"
Adrien looked at me, a dangerous, brilliant spark igniting in his gaze. "I am going to attend. As the true Don of the Hudson Syndicate."
"Adrien, they think you're weak! They know you retired!" I argued, fear spiking again.
"They think I retired because I was defeated," Adrien replied, stepping to my bedside. "Tonight, I show them that I walked away from the throne because none of them were worthy to challenge me for it. And I show the families that Julian Moretti is a dog trying to sell them a kingdom he cannot hold."
"You're walking into a den of vipers without weapons," I whispered.
"I won't be alone," Adrien said, his gaze holding mine with breathtaking intensity. "You are coming with me."
"What? The doctor said—"
"Julian thinks I hide you because you are my weakness," Adrien said, leaning down, framing my face with his hands. "Tonight, Elena, we show the underworld that you are not my weakness. You are my queen. And the moment they see you standing beside me, unbroken, untamed, carrying the next heir of the Hudson empire, Julian’s grand coalition will crumble under the weight of their own fear."
Six hours later, I stood before a full-length mirror in a private suite overlooking the harbor of Monte Carlo.
I barely recognized the woman looking back at me. My hair was swept up into an intricate, regal chignon fastened with diamond pins. I wore an emerald-green silk velvet gown custom-tailored to flatter the proud curve of my seven-month belly, dipping into an elegant off-the-shoulder neckline. Around my neck hung the historic Hudson family collar—hundreds of carats of flawless diamonds framing a massive emerald pendant.
The door opened, and Adrien walked in.
He was breathtaking. Dressed in a bespoke black tuxedo with satin lapels, his dark hair combed back, his posture commanding and lethal, he looked every inch the emperor of the underworld.
He stopped behind me, his hands resting gently over mine upon my stomach. His reflection met mine in the glass.
"Are you ready, Elena?" he whispered, his voice dark and melodic.
I took a deep breath, feeling the kick of our daughter inside me, and lifted my chin.
May you like
"Let's go take back your empire."
