Chapter 31 - The Ghost of Bloodline

The barrel of Elena’s gun did not waver, even as the icy wind howled through the shattered entryway, tossing her dark hair across her eyes. Her fingers gripped the steel frame until her knuckles turned porcelain white. Before her stood the living mirror of her husband—the same obsidian arrogance in the set of his jaw, the same broad shoulders framed in immaculate charcoal wool. But the eyes were hollowed out, devoid of the burning fire that made Adrien Hudson both her tormentor and her savior.
"Lower the weapon, Elena," Lucian Moretti purred, stepping over the threshold. Glass crunched beneath his polished leather boots. "You wouldn’t want to wake your precious Aurelia upstairs, would you? Such sweet lungs on that child. It would be a tragedy if she learned to scream before she learned to speak."
"Take one more step, and the only sound in this house will be your brains painting the foyer," Elena snarled, her voice dropping into a deadly, maternal register. The bloody platinum ring burned in her coat pocket like molten lead. "Adrien killed you in Bucharest three years ago. I saw the coroner’s report. I saw the dental records."
Lucian chuckled—a low, grating sound that vibrated like rusted iron. "Adrien saw what I permitted him to see. He always was the sentimental one, blinded by loyalty, blinded by pride... and blinded by you. He traded his soul to keep you safe five years ago, Elena. Did you ever wonder why he let Vanessa Cole live? Why he looked at another woman and whispered those words: *Keep her*?"
Elena’s pulse hammered against her ribs, but her aim remained rock solid. "You’re lying."
"Am I?" Lucian tilted his head, watching her with predatory amusement. "Vanessa wasn't his mistress, little bird. She was my collateral. Adrien gave her sanctuary because as long as Vanessa breathed under his watch, the Syndicate believed I was contained. But Adrien got greedy. He married you. He dared to build a kingdom of his own out of my bloodright. And now, the debt has come due."
A floorboard creaked in the upper gallery. Elena didn’t dare look up, but her instincts screamed. Hans was behind her, trembling, yet Elena knew that in this world, terror was contagious and loyalty was bought by the highest bidder.
"Where is he?" she demanded.
"In the dark, where usurpers belong," Lucian answered smoothly. He raised two fingers. From the swirling snow outside, four heavily armed operatives stepped into the light, their tactical carbines aimed directly at her chest. "Drop the gun, Elena. Hand over the girl. And perhaps Adrien will die quickly instead of screaming for three agonizing days."
Elena smiled, a cold, terrifying curve of her lips that made Lucian’s eyes narrow in sudden hesitation.
"You studied Adrien," Elena whispered softly. "You know every move he makes. But you forgot one thing, Lucian."
"And what is that?"
"You didn't study me."
Elena’s left hand plunged into the inner lining of her coat and struck the remote detonator Adrien had hidden beneath the marble bust of Marcus Aurelius near the archway.
A deafening blast shattered the vestibule. Concussive force ripped through the entryway, blowing two of Lucian's operatives backward into the freezing courtyard while blinding magnesium flare smoke flooded the hall. Lucian cursed, firing blindly into the blinding fog, but Elena had already spun around. She grabbed Hans by the collar, dragging the old man toward the service hallway behind the grand staircase, racing up toward the nursery where her daughter slept.
