Chapter 30 - The Shadow Behind the Throne

The private estate in Zurich was supposed to be the safest compound in Western Europe. Built into the granite foothills, surrounded by three layers of biometric security fences, infrared tripwires, and guarded by fifty of Adrien’s most loyal personal soldiers.

Midnight struck.

Elena lay in the master suite, Aurelia sleeping soundly in a reinforced steel bassinet directly beside her bed. The soothing hum of the white noise machine filled the room. Elena rolled over, her hand searching for Adrien’s side of the bed.

It was cold. Empty.

Elena sat up, an icy spike of dread piercing her chest. "Adrien?"

She slipped out of bed, grabbing her Walther from the nightstand. She crept toward the suite's private balcony overlooking the manicured grounds.

Below, the perimeter lights suddenly flickered.

Once. Twice.

Then, absolute, impenetrable darkness swallowed the entire compound.

The backup generators didn't kick in. The hum of the security grid vanished. The silent estate was plunged into a terrifying, unnatural void.

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She rushed back to the cradle, picking Aurelia up and strapping the baby into the tactical chest harness against her body. She racked the slide of her weapon, stepping toward the heavy double doors of the bedroom.

The hallway was dead silent.

"Marco? Keller?" Elena called out, her voice barely a whisper.

No response.

She moved down the sweeping marble staircase. In the center of the grand foyer, lit only by the pale, ghostly moonlight filtering through the skylight, stood a single figure.

It wasn't a mercenary.

It was an elderly butler, trembling violently, holding a silver tray.

Elena descended the stairs with weapon raised, her finger on the trigger. "Hans? What is happening? Where are the guards? Where is Adrien?"

"Mrs. Hudson..." the old man stammered, tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks. "They... they didn't breach the gates. They were already inside. The new security detail hired from the Swiss firm... they turned their guns on Mr. Hudson five minutes ago in the courtyard."

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. "Where is he?!"

The butler held out the trembling silver tray. Upon it lay a sleek, black velvet box, tied with a crimson silk ribbon. Beside it was Adrien’s heavy platinum wedding band—covered in fresh, slick blood.

"He said to give you this, Madame," Hans whispered.

Elena’s hands shook violently as she reached out, taking the bloody wedding ring into her palm, clutching it until the metal cut into her skin. With trembling fingers, she pulled the ribbon and opened the velvet box.

Inside rested a single chess piece carved from black marble: a shattered King.

Beneath the chess piece was a handwritten note in elegant, archaic calligraphy:

*“You fought bravely for your daughter, Elena. But Adrien belongs to the grave he stole from me. If you wish to see your husband draw another breath, bring the child to the catacombs of Palermo on the winter solstice. Come alone. Or the next box will contain his heart.”*

Suddenly, the front doors of the estate blew open with a violent gust of freezing wind.

Elena snapped her weapon toward the entrance.

Standing in the doorway, silhouetted against the moonlight, was a tall man in a tailored charcoal coat. His face was identical to Adrien’s—the same carved jawline, the same towering height, the same aristocratic cheekbones.

Except his eyes were not obsidian.

May you like

They were cold, soulless, and dead.

"Hello, little sister," Lucian Moretti smiled, stepping across the threshold as the shadows swallowed the room. "I believe you have something of mine."
