Chapter 29 - The Architect of Ruin

Thirty-six hours later.

The private medical suite at the Moretti family’s heavily fortified estate in Zurich was silent.

Elena sat in a plush armchair, wearing a soft cashmere sweater, gently rocking Aurelia to sleep. The private pediatrician had just completed a full examination: the baby was severely dehydrated from the ordeal, but otherwise completely healthy.

Beside the bed, a massive vase of white lilacs—Elena’s favorite—perfumed the sterile room, masking the phantom scent of gunpowder that still lingered in Elena’s memories.

The door opened silently. Adrien walked in.

He had showered and changed into a clean black tailored suit, but the dark circles beneath his eyes and the fresh stitches across his cheekbone betrayed the war he had just fought.

He walked over to Elena, crouching beside the rocking chair. His fingers, calloused and lethal, were feather-light as he stroked his daughter’s sleeping cheek.

"Marco survived the surgery in Naples," Adrien said quietly. "The doctors say he’ll walk again in six months."

Elena let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. "Thank God. If Matteo had died because of this..."

"He lived because he’s a fighter. Just like his Don’s wife," Adrien murmured, lifting his eyes to Elena. The raw adoration and reverence in his gaze took her breath away. "I had the estate in Lake Como demolished. We will never go back there. I’ve bought an island in the Azores under an untraceable trust. No one knows it exists except me and Keller. We can leave tonight. We can disappear."

Elena reached out, her fingers tangling in his dark, thick hair. "Adrien... who was that voice in the bunker?"

Adrien’s jaw tightened. The tenderness in his face receded, replaced by the ancient, cold shadow that had haunted him for a decade.

"Lucian," Adrien said, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. "My older brother."

Elena gasped. "You told me Lucian was killed in the syndicate car bombing ten years ago. You said you inherited the Moretti throne because you were the sole survivor."

"That’s what I believed," Adrien answered, his voice hollow. "I pulled his charred watch from the wreckage. I buried the remains identified by our family coroner. But Vanessa... Vanessa’s father was Lucian’s mentor. If Lucian survived, it means the car bombing wasn't an assassination attempt by our rivals. It was a staged exit."

Elena’s maternal instincts flared again, a chill running down her spine. "Why would he fake his death and leave the empire to you?"

"Because the Moretti empire had three billion dollars in untraceable debts to the Global Triad back then," Adrien revealed, looking down at his scarred palms. "Our father had bankrupted us. Lucian knew that whoever took the throne would be targeted for execution by every cartel from Moscow to Bogota. He faked his death so I would take the fall. He let me fight the wars, bleed for ten years, rebuild the family fortune, and turn the Moretti syndicate into the most powerful empire in Europe."

Elena’s eyes widened with horrifying realization. "And now that you’ve rebuilt it..."

May you like

"Now that the empire is richer and more powerful than ever," Adrien finished grimly, "the rightful heir has come to claim his throne."
