Chapter 6 - The Blood Debt Unveiled

Screams erupted from the grand ballroom, echoing down the corridor.
The heavy mahogany doors of the powder room burst open. Before I could move, a figure lunged out of the shadows. I prepared to strike, but an arm wrapped around my waist like an iron band, lifting me off my feet.
"I have you," Adrien’s voice cut through the dark, fierce and unmistakable.
Gunfire shattered the silence outside—the sharp, deafening staccato of automatic weapons ripping through the ballroom chandeliers. Glass rained down like hail. Adrien kicked the service door open, shielding my body entirely with his own as we burst into the rear kitchen corridor.
Matteo was already there, his weapon drawn, firing two precise shots down the stairwell to drop an advancing assailant in black tactical gear.
"Vance breached the subterranean delivery bay!" Matteo yelled over the chaos. "The perimeter is collapsed! We need to move now!"
Adrien didn't run. He shoved me behind a stainless-steel prep counter, his eyes scanning the corridor, his gun drawn. His tuxedo was smeared with drywall dust, his breathing controlled despite the adrenaline pumping through the air.
"Elena, are you hit?" he demanded, his hands frantically checking my arms, my ribs, my legs. "Talk to me. Are you bleeding?"
"I’m fine!" I yelled, pulling away from him, clutching the crumpled napkin and the polaroid in my fist. "Adrien, look at me!"
He met my eyes, his face illuminated by the flashing red emergency strobe lights overhead.
I shoved the photograph against his chest. "Did you burn it? Did you burn my father’s warehouse in Milan?"
Adrien froze. His eyes dropped to the photograph. For a fraction of a second, the mask of the untouchable mob boss slipped, revealing a boy caught in an ancient, unforgiving sin.
"Elena, that wasn't—"
"Tell me the truth!" I screamed, uncaring of the gunfire echoing down the hall. "Tell me the truth or let them shoot me right now! Did you destroy my family to force me to marry you?!"
Adrien grabbed my face, his eyes burning with an agony so profound it stopped the breath in my throat.
"Yes!" he roared over the sound of an exploding grenade down the hall. "I burned it! Because Vance was using that warehouse to traffic teenage girls into Europe under your father's name! Your father didn't just have a gambling debt, Elena—he was Vance’s front! If that warehouse had stood for another forty-eight hours, the federal government would have put your father in supermax, and Vance would have executed you and your mother to tie off the loose ends! I burned it to save your name! I burned it to destroy Vance’s pipeline! And I paid your father's debt to buy your freedom from the syndicate's vengeance!"
The truth hit me like a physical blow. The world ceased to spin; it simply shattered.
My father wasn't an innocent victim. He was a collaborator. And Adrien hadn't trapped me—he had built a fortress around me out of the rubble of my family’s sins.
"I didn't tell you," Adrien rasped, his forehead resting against mine as gunshots drew nearer, "because I wanted you to keep loving the memory of your father. I took the blame. I let you think I was the monster so you wouldn't have to mourn the man who raised you."
Tears streamed down my face, hot and blinding. "Adrien..."
"Matteo! Rear exit!" Adrien commanded, pulling me to my feet.
As we sprinted toward the loading dock, a sharp, white-hot spasm tore through my lower abdomen. The sheer terror, the shock, and the sprint caused my vision to blur completely.
I stumbled. My hand slipped from Adrien’s grasp.
"Elena!"

I didn't hit the concrete. Adrien caught me, but as he pulled me up, my body gave out entirely. The world went dark, and the last thing I felt was Adrien falling to his knees with me in his arms, screaming for a medic as the iron gates of the loading dock blew open.
