Chapter 1 - The Shadow at Nora’s Door

The sound of rain against the fourth-floor glass of Nora’s Queens apartment felt like a countdown. Inside the cramped hallway, the yellow ceiling bulb flickered, casting long, bruised shadows across Matteo Romano’s face. He still held one hand inside his dark overcoat, right where his custom SIG Sauer rested against his ribs, but his shoulders were slumped with an exhaustion I had never seen in all five years of knowing him.
Nora did not lower the aluminum bat. Her knuckles were white, her eyes burning with the fierce, unyielding loyalty of someone who had watched me give my soul to a man made of smoke and iron, only to see me arrive on her doorstep at two in the morning soaked in tears and betrayal.
"Get off my landing, Matteo," Nora said, her voice shaking with adrenaline. "Or I swear to God I’ll scream out the fire escape and wake every off-duty beat cop on this block."
Matteo didn’t flinch at the threat. In our world, the police were an inconvenience to be bought or rerouted, not a shield. His gaze remained locked on me, ignoring Nora entirely.
"Elena," he said, and his voice was rough, scraped raw from hours of shouting over radio frequencies. "You need to put your coat on. Now. We have less than four minutes before this entire avenue is sealed off."
"I’m not going back to him," I said. My voice was low, flat, and stripped of the softness Adrien had once loved. I pressed my left forearm tightly across my stomach—an instinctive, protective gesture that I prayed Matteo wouldn’t decode. Beneath my wool sweater, beneath my skin, my seven-week-old secret was safe. And I would bleed before I let Adrien’s war touch this baby. "Tell him the ring is where he left his dinner. Tell him he can keep Vanessa Cole, keep his empire, and keep his lies. I am done."
Matteo let out a harsh, bitter breath that smelled faintly of burnt coffee and gunpowder. "You think this is about Vanessa Cole?"
"I heard you on the speakerphone, Matteo!" The rage broke through my numbness, hot and stinging behind my eyelids. "I was standing in the hall. You asked what he wanted done with her, and he told you to *keep* her. I saw the photograph outside the Mercer Crown. His hand on her waist. The way she tilted her neck toward him. Do you take me for an idiot? Was five years of marriage just a holding pattern until he found someone who fit into his blood-soaked boardrooms?"
Matteo stepped forward. Nora raised the bat, but Matteo moved with terrifying, fluid speed, catching the barrel of the bat with his palm, pushing it down without hurting her, and stepping inside the doorway just far enough to cut off the draft from the stairs.
"Vanessa Cole is not his mistress, Elena," Matteo hissed, lowering his voice until it was a lethal whisper. "Vanessa Cole is Lucian Vance’s lead courier. And she carried two kilograms of synthetic neurotoxin into Midtown yesterday afternoon—poison meant for the ventilation system of your private residence."
The room went deathly silent. The only sound was Nora’s ragged breathing and the dripping water from Matteo’s boots.
My stomach dropped, an icy spike of fear piercing through the lingering haze of my heartbreak. "What?"
"Adrien didn’t touch her because he wanted her," Matteo said, his eyes drilling into mine with frantic urgency. "He met her at the Mercer Crown because we intercepted her handler twenty minutes before the drop. Adrien took the meeting himself so she wouldn't trigger the secondary dead-man switch. When he told me to 'keep her,' he meant in the subterranean vault at the Brooklyn docks, strapped to an iron chair until she gave up Vance’s extraction coordinates. He came home to get you out of the city. But you weren't there."
My throat closed up. The memory of Adrien walking past our candlelit table flashed through my mind. His pale face. His tight, bloodless lips. *I need ten minutes, cara.*
"Why didn't he tell me?" I whispered, my voice trembling as the world tilted beneath my feet. "Why the lies? Why five months of coming home at dawn? Why locking me out?"
"Because Vance swore he would skin you alive if Adrien showed any sign of knowing the network was compromised," Matteo said bluntly. "Adrien was building an airtight cage around you, Elena. He took the target off your back and put it on his own chest. And while you were packing your bags to play the wounded wife, Vance’s scouts were tracking your cab."
A cold sweat broke out across my collarbone. "Tracking me?"
"You left your phone on when you arrived here, didn't you?" Matteo asked.
Before I could answer, the streetlamp below the window flickered and died. A muffled *pop* echoed from the stairwell below—the unmistakable sound of a suppressed pistol shot taking out the first-floor security latch.

Matteo didn't waste another breath. He drew his weapon, kicked Nora’s apartment door shut, and grabbed my arm with bruising force. "Fire escape. Now. If they take you, Adrien will burn this entire city to the ground—and he won't survive the fire."
