Chapter 26 - Checkmate in Silver

Elena walked down the plushly carpeted corridor, her boots making no sound. The blaring sirens were muted here, replaced by a terrifying, haunting melody: a classical music box playing a warped version of a Brahms lullaby.

At the end of the hall, the heavy double oak doors stood ajar.

Elena kicked the door wide, sweeping the muzzle of her rifle across the room.

The observation suite was warm, lit by a crackling stone fireplace. Standing in front of the hearth, dressed impeccably, was Vanessa Cole. She held a silver, snub-nosed revolver in her right hand.

In her left arm, she held Aurelia.

The baby was sleeping, oblivious to the carnage outside, her tiny fist tucked against her chin beneath the pink blanket.

Elena’s heart stopped. The sight of her newborn daughter in the arms of the monster who had terrorized her marriage made the air leave her lungs.

"Put her down, Vanessa," Elena said, her voice dropping to a deadly, lethal stillness. Her rifle was locked onto Vanessa’s forehead.

"Do you really think you can shoot me before I pull this trigger?" Vanessa smiled, her eyes wild with madness. She pressed the silver barrel of the revolver against Aurelia’s swaddling blanket. "One twitch of my finger, Elena. One twitch, and your little happily-ever-after is painted across that hearth."

Elena froze. The weapon in her hands felt infinitely heavy.

"What do you want, Vanessa?" Elena asked, fighting to keep her voice perfectly steady. "You want Adrien? Take him. You want the Hudson territory? Take it all. Just put the child down."

Vanessa laughed, a high, mocking sound that echoed off the stone walls. "You think this is about territory? You pathetic little socialite. You stole my destiny! I was groomed from the age of seven to rule beside Adrien Moretti Hudson. I was trained to endure the poisons, the assassinations, the blood! And then he met *you* at some bourgeois charity auction in New York, and suddenly the King forgot his crown!"

"He didn't forget his crown," Elena countered slowly, taking half a step to the left, angling herself to keep Vanessa’s firing arm in clear view. "He chose a human life over a bloodbath. He chose love."

"Love is a weakness that gets men killed!" Vanessa screamed, her poise slipping, revealing the rotting psychotic obsession underneath. "He will come back to me. Once you and this little bastard are wiped from this earth, Adrien will realize that only I can stand beside him in the dark!"

"You're wrong," Elena said softly.

"Am I?" Vanessa cocked the hammer of the revolver. The mechanical click sounded like a thunderclap in the room.

*BOOM!*

The entire back wall behind the fireplace erupted inward in a catastrophic explosion of concrete, dust, and shrapnel.

The shockwave threw Vanessa off balance.

Elena didn't waste a millisecond. She dropped her rifle, launched herself across the Persian rug like a lioness, and slammed her entire body into Vanessa.
