Chapter 39 - The Shattered Crown

The silence that enveloped the vault was deafening.
"Julian didn't leave Cole an inheritance," I breathed, the horrific realization settling into my bones. "He left him a landmine. If Cole claims the Vance empire, he takes on the criminal liabilities of Julian's forty-year fraud. Cole will go to prison for the rest of his life."
"Julian hated everyone," Emma whispered, covering her mouth with both hands. "He hated Marcus. He hated Claire. He hated me. And he hated Cole. He wanted to destroy his own children even from the grave."
Suddenly, the red lights flickered and switched back to harsh, bright white.
A loud pneumatic hiss sounded from the blast door. The heavy steel moved slowly, grinding open against its hinges.
Standing on the threshold was not the police.
It was Cole Vance.
He stood in the opening, clutching a heavy crowbar in one hand and his phone in the other. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, his tailored sweater damp with sweat. He had stayed upstairs, listening to the intercom feed. He had heard every word of Julian's recorded confession.
He dropped the crowbar. The heavy iron clattered against the concrete floor with a ringing strike.
Cole walked toward the safe like a man walking toward the edge of an abyss. His face was entirely devoid of color, his hands shaking uncontrollably.
"He lied to me," Cole whispered, his voice cracking like thin ice. "My whole life... twenty-two years... he told me I was his chosen son. He told me I was destined to rule what he built."
He fell to his knees in front of the biometric safe, resting his forehead against the cold, unyielding steel. A dry, choking sob escaped his throat—the sound of an identity shattering into a million jagged pieces.
Emma stepped forward.
"Emma, stay back," David warned, putting out an arm to protect her.
Emma gently pushed David’s arm down. She walked slowly across the concrete floor, kneeling beside the brother she had met only hours before.
She didn't reach for the safe. She reached for Cole's trembling hand.
"He was a monster, Cole," Emma said softly, tears streaming down her face. "He took your mother from you. He took your childhood. But you don't have to let him take the rest of your life."
Cole pulled his hand back violently, his eyes wild with grief, pride, and humiliation. "Don't look at me like that! Don't you dare pity me! I am a Vance!"
"There is no Vance empire, Cole!" Emma cried out, grabbing his shoulders with surprising strength. "It’s a prison! It’s all built on lies, stolen pensions, and dead bodies! Julian set this up so we would destroy each other fighting over ashes!"
Cole stared into Emma's face. In her eyes, he didn't see Julian's cold contempt. He didn't see Marcus's greed. He saw Claire's warmth. He saw a mirror of himself that hadn't been poisoned by Julian's cruelty.
A tear slipped from Cole’s eye, tracing down his cheek. He looked down at the safe, then up at his sister.

"What do we do?" Cole whispered, his voice sounding like that of a lost, terrified boy. "What do I do with the twenty-two years he stole from me?"
"We destroy the crown," Emma said firmly. "Together."
