Chapter 33 - A Face in the Mirror

By two in the morning, the rain had settled into a sullen, misty drizzle, but the tension inside our home was suffocating.

Bradley had detained Cole outside, running his identification and escorting him to the station downtown for trespassing and violation of the perimeter, though Cole had gone willingly, accompanied by a high-priced legal team that seemed to materialize from thin air within thirty minutes of his arrest.

David arrived at 2:30 AM, his raincoat soaked, his face lined with deep exhaustion and lingering remorse. Ever since our bitter divorce and his painful path toward redemption, David had tried to act as an unyielding bulwark for our fractured family, seeking to atone for the secrets that had nearly destroyed us all.

"He has papers, Sarah," David said, pacing the length of my kitchen while Elena Ramos, our corporate attorney, sat at the breakfast island reviewing a stack of scanned documents sent by Bradley. "Real papers. Julian forged an international birth certificate in Switzerland under the name 'Cole Julian Vance.' But the hospital records Bradley pulled from the state vault match the footprint registry from Claire’s delivery room."

Elena adjusted her glasses, her sharp eyes scanning the digital PDF on her tablet. "It’s horrifyingly legitimate. Claire gave birth to twins. Julian’s private obstetrician signed off on a false single-birth certificate, while the secondary certificate was routed through an unlisted private clinic in Zurich that Julian owned. Cole was legally recognized in Switzerland as Julian’s primary biological son eighteen years ago."

Emma sat at the dining table, staring at a high-resolution photograph of Cole that Bradley had texted over.

It was uncanny. Cole’s features were an exact, inverted twin to Emma’s. The delicate arch of her eyebrows was carved with a sharper, harder angle on his brow. The slight cleft in her chin was present in his. But beneath the shared DNA lay an ocean of separation: Emma had been raised with warmth, hardship, and humility; Cole had been incubated in wealth, arrogance, and the toxic philosophy of Julian Vance.

"He looks like me," Emma whispered, a single tear tracking down her cheek onto the polished wood. "He looks like Claire. Sarah, how could Julian do this? How could a father split his own children like cattle and hide one across the ocean just to keep his money safe?"

I sat beside her, wrapping my arm around her trembling shoulders. "Because to Julian, people weren't human beings, Emma. They were assets. He weaponized you to hurt Claire, and he weaponized Cole to protect his empire after he died."

"And now he wants everything," David said, his jaw clenched, leaning over the counter. "The trust funds, the Vance estate, the restitution money Emma set aside for Claire’s medical foundation. Cole’s lawyers have already filed an emergency injunction to freeze every bank account transferred to Emma last month."

Elena closed her tablet with a heavy snap. "It’s worse than that. Cole’s filing doesn't just contest the money. Because Emma is technically the primary beneficiary of Claire’s estate, Cole is claiming Emma is legally unfit due to undue influence by Sarah. He is petitioning for full conservatorship over Emma’s Vance assets—and filing a civil claim asserting parental ties to Julian’s bloodline, including Claire’s remaining estate."

"He wants to erase her," I said, a deep, primal anger igniting in my chest. "He wants to take what Claire died to protect, and hand it right back to Julian's twisted legacy."

"Not while I'm breathing," Emma said suddenly.

She stood up. The fragile, terrified girl who had cried in the hallway was gone. In her eyes burned the fire of Claire Vance—the fierce, unyielding light of a woman who had survived hell and refused to be conquered twice.

"He wants to see his sister?" Emma said, her voice dropping into icy resolve. "Then let's go downtown. I want to look Julian's golden boy in the eyes."
