Chapter 15 - The Battle for Lily

The threat was real, precise, and devastating. Richard Sterling wasn't just a disgruntled estate lawyer; he was acting on behalf of Claire’s surviving sister, Victoria Vance, a woman with immense wealth, high-powered connections, and no children of her own. Victoria had recently discovered the existence of Emma and Lily through a probate audit and was now wielding the old contract as a cudgel to claim sole legal guardianship of baby Lily, citing Emma’s past financial instability and James’s alleged "abandonment settlement."
When we returned home, Emma was on the floor of the nursery, hyperventilating as she held Lily against her chest.
"They served me," Emma sobbed, pointing to a crisp white envelope on the changing table. "A custody summons. Court in forty-eight hours. They’re claiming I’m unfit because I spent three months in a women’s shelter before Lily was born. They're going to tear my baby away from me!"
I walked over, dropped to my knees, and wrapped my arms around both Emma and Lily.
"Listen to me, Emma," I said, my voice steady, steel-threaded and unyielding. "Look at me."
Emma raised her tear-streaked face.
"For eleven years, I thought my life was defined by the neat, safe boundaries James and I built," I told her. "When you walked into our lives, my world shattered. But I didn't fight through the heartbreak and rebuild this family just to let a vulture in a private jet swoop in and steal my granddaughter. You are not alone anymore. You have a mother now, Emma. And nobody touches my family."

James stood in the doorway, his eyes shining with unshed tears, witnessing the fierce, unconditional shield I was throwing around his firstborn.
"We need the best defense attorney in the state," James said, rolling up his sleeves. "And we need to prove the 2002 contract was a fraudulent transaction executed without my knowledge."
