Chapter 28 - The Press Conference

The Manhattan Supreme Courthouse was swarming with reporters by Friday morning. Marcus Vance had orchestrated a media circus, positioning himself as the righteous heir fighting against an 'imposter sister' and an opportunist former intern.
Camera flashes exploded in rhythmic waves as James, Emma, Claire, and I walked up the marble steps flanked by private security.
Marcus Vance stood at the top of the steps, surrounded by four defense attorneys in bespoke suits. He looked like an older, sharper, crueler version of Claire—slicked-back silvering hair, cold gray eyes, and a predatory smirk that signaled absolute supreme confidence.
"Claire," Marcus sneered as we approached, his voice dripping with condescension. "Back from the grave to steal what doesn't belong to you? And you brought your peasant husband and his concubine."
James took a violent step forward, but I caught his arm, my nails digging into his wool sleeve. "James, don't. He wants a scene."
Claire didn't blink. She stopped three feet from her brother, her head held impeccably high. "Marcus. You look worried. Did the Swiss prosecutors reach out to your office this morning?"
The smirk on Marcus's face wavered for a fraction of a second. "You have no legal standing, sister. The DNA tests from Sonnenberg haven't been certified by New York State, and this man's bigamous life will be paraded across every tabloid in the country by evening."
"Then let's go inside and let Judge Holbrooke review the certified Swiss records," I said, stepping forward, meeting Marcus's cold glare with unyielding resolve. "Because unlike you, Mr. Vance, we don't hide behind fraudulent death certificates and forged adoption papers. We bring the receipts."
The courtroom doors opened, and the hearing commenced.
For four agonizing hours, lawyers traded blows over jurisdictional authority, foreign death verifications, and marital statutes. Marcus’s lead counsel argued viciously that Claire was an impostor funded by international syndicates seeking to hijack the Vance estate.
Then, Claire took the witness stand.
She didn't just produce her passport. She produced a handwritten journal kept by Julian Vance himself during his final months in a private Swiss clinic—a journal obtained under court-ordered Swiss probate law, explicitly detailing how he orchestrated her disappearance, how he falsified Emma’s birth records, and how Marcus had actively bribed county officials to suppress the truth.
Judge Holbrooke, a stern woman in her late sixties, flipped through the certified consular documents. The silence in the courtroom was suffocating.
"The evidence of fraudulent concealment by Julian Vance is overwhelming," Judge Holbrooke pronounced, her voice echoing off the high wood paneling. "The court recognizes Claire Marie Vance as the lawful, living heir to the Vance estate. Furthermore, regarding the Vermont marriage of 2002..."
My breath caught in my throat. James reached out beneath the counsel table, his fingers interlocking tightly with mine, his knuckles white.
"Given the extraordinary circumstances of twenty-two years of involuntary concealment and fraudulent death registration," the judge continued, "this court exercises its equitable jurisdiction to grant an immediate, nunc pro tunc dissolution of the 2002 marriage, retroactive to the date of presumed death. The subsequent marriage between James Miller and Sarah Miller is hereby recognized as legally valid and unimpeachable under the laws of this state."
A collective gasp rippled through the press gallery.
James slumped forward, burying his face in my neck, weeping openly in front of the entire courtroom. I held his head, my own tears spilling freely over his dark hair.
Marcus Vance stood up abruptly, his face contorted in absolute fury, his chair knocking against the rail. "This isn't over! Holbrooke, this is an outrage! I will appeal this to the Second Circuit!"
May you like
"You can appeal from a holding cell, Mr. Vance," two federal marshals stepped into the courtroom from the side door, unhooking handcuffs from their belts. "Marcus Vance, you are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant for wire fraud, witness tampering, and money laundering."
Marcus turned pale as the cuffs clicked around his wrists, being led away in front of a dozen flashing camera lenses.
