Chapter 14 - The Confrontation

The next morning broke under an ominous canopy of slate-gray clouds. The house felt like a battleground where everyone spoke in hushed, guarded tones. Emma stayed confined to the guest bedroom, rocking Lily with a hollow gaze, while our three boys ate their breakfast in confused silence before my sister picked them up for school.
I didn't give James time to plan a cover story. At eight o'clock sharp, we were standing in the sterile, mahogany-lined office of Thomas Miller, James’s paternal uncle and the former executor of the Miller family trust.
Thomas, an impeccably groomed man in his late sixties, barely blinked when I slammed the settlement agreement onto his antique desk.
"You're making a scene, Sarah," Thomas said mildly, taking off his gold-rimmed reading glasses. "James, control your wife."
"Shut up, Thomas," James growled, stepping past me. I had never seen James look so venomous. The mild-mannered, apologetic husband was gone; in his place was a ferocious protector. "You told me the bank took the family house. You told me my father died penniless and that Evelyn Vance had legally severed my rights through the state courts. Where did this two hundred and fifty thousand dollars go?"
Thomas leaned back in his leather chair, unaffected by James’s fury. "It went to save your skin, Jimmy. Your father owed loan sharks. They were threatening to burn down the house with your mother inside. Evelyn Vance offered a way out: surrender the girl to her maternal lineage, take the severance payout, and wipe the family slate clean. I signed the paperwork using your power of attorney. You were too sentimental, too weak to make the hard choice."
"You forged my consent to sell my daughter so you could cover your own brother’s gambling debts?" James lunged across the desk, grabbing Thomas by the lapels of his tailored suit.

"James, don't!" I screamed, pulling on his arm.
"Call the police if you want, Jimmy," Thomas wheezed, his face turning red under James’s grip. "The paper is legal. Evelyn's trust wants the principal returned with twenty years of compounded interest—or they will take custody of Claire’s direct blood heir. Little baby Lily."
