Chapter 35 - The Vault of Secrets

The clock was ticking. Forty-eight hours.

By sunrise, our team was gathered at Elena Ramos’s office on the twenty-second floor of the city's financial tower. The city below was waking up under a shroud of gray fog, completely oblivious to the war being waged in quiet conference rooms.

David brought in coffee, placing a cup beside Emma, who hadn't slept a wink. Lily was at home with Sarah’s sister, under twenty-four-hour private security arranged by Bradley.

"He's bluffing about the psychiatric records," David insisted, rubbing his bloodshot eyes. "Claire Vance was a victim of Julian's systematic abuse. Any court will see through an attempt to posthumously defame her."

"A civil court might, David, but a probate court operates on black-and-white statutes," Elena corrected, pulling up the state inheritance code on the wall projector. "If Julian included a codicil in an unregistered vault, accompanied by proof that Cole was intentionally named sole beneficiary under Swiss jurisdiction, the American transfers could be frozen for up to ten years in international probate litigation. During that time, Emma loses access to the trust. The legal defense alone will bleed her dry."

"Then we beat him to the vault," I said, standing up and staring at the city skyline.

Elena looked up, stunned. "Sarah, that's Julian's private property in Boston. The main Vance manor was sealed by the bank pending the finalization of the trust. Breaking in would be a federal felony."

"It's not breaking in if Emma owns the deed," I countered. "Emma is currently the legal administrator of the Vance estate. The injunction Cole filed hasn't been granted by a judge yet—it takes forty-eight hours for an emergency docket hearing. Right now, at this exact moment, Emma has full, unfettered legal authority to inspect any and all property owned by Julian Vance."

Emma looked up, a spark of cunning flashing across her features. "She's right. The bank manager called me last week offering the master security codes to the Boston library to inventory the art collection. I still have the executive authorization pass on my phone."

Elena’s eyes widened. "If we retrieve whatever is in that vault before Cole's lawyers serve the formal freezing order, we control the evidence. We control the narrative."

"We leave in twenty minutes," David said, grabbing his car keys. "Boston is a three-hour drive. If Cole’s legal team is preparing the filing, they won't expect us to move before the afternoon."

As we prepared to leave, my phone chimed. It was an encrypted text message from an unknown number.

*You're playing a game Julian designed thirty years ago, Sarah. The vault isn't a treasure chest. It's a mousetrap. See you in Boston.*

I deleted the text, slipped the phone into my pocket, and met Emma's gaze. "He knows," I said quietly.

Emma took a deep breath, straightening her coat. "Let him know. Let's see if Julian's heir can handle Claire's daughter."
