Chapter 18 - Blood and Law

Silence fell over the courtroom like a heavy iron curtain. Judge Wright looked up sharply, her eyes pinning Sterling in place. "Explain yourself, counsel."

Diane stepped forward, submitting our newly uncovered banking transcripts, Thomas Miller’s signed confession—obtained by James and our legal investigator at dawn—and the original probate audit logs.

"In 2002," Diane announced with ringing clarity, "Richard Sterling conspired with Thomas Miller to divert two hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the late Evelyn Vance’s charitable reserves under the guise of an illegitimate custody settlement. James Miller’s signature was executed via an unauthorized and outdated general power of attorney. James Miller never received a dime, never surrendered his daughter willingly, and Emma Miller was subsequently stolen from her rightful father through deceit."

Victoria Vance gasped, turning on her lawyer with savage realization. "Richard? Is this true?"

"Your Honor, this is completely irrelevant to the immediate fitness of the mother!" Sterling sputtered, perspiration beading on his forehead.

"It is entirely relevant to the integrity of this petition!" Judge Wright snapped. She turned her attention to Emma. "Ms. Vance-Miller, please approach the bench."

Emma looked at me, terrified. I gave her hand a firm, reassuring squeeze. "Go on, sweetheart. Speak for your daughter."

Emma rose. She walked to the podium with her shoulders pulled back, standing taller than she ever had before.

"Your Honor," Emma said, her voice clear and resonant, filling the courtroom. "I spent my whole life feeling like an unwanted ghost, believing my father had thrown me away. But the man who holds my baby daughter today didn't abandon me. And the woman standing beside him, Sarah, didn't have to love me, but she took me in and fought for me. Victoria Vance has billions of dollars, but she has never held Lily. She doesn't know what song makes her fall asleep. We are a family, Your Honor. Imperfect, wounded, but unbroken. You cannot buy my child, and you cannot take her from the home where she is loved."
