Chapter 27 - The Legal War

The morning paper didn't carry the story yet, but by Wednesday noon, the legal storm had broken over our heads with devastating velocity.

Our family attorney, David Morris, arrived at our home with two high-powered litigation specialists. The living room was converted into a war room, littered with legal briefs, tax filings, and birth certificates.

"Here is the brutal reality," David said, tapping a thick blue folder on the coffee table. "Because Claire Vance was declared legally deceased under fraudulent circumstances, the Vermont marriage was never officially terminated by death or divorce. When James married Sarah eleven years ago, he entered the marriage in good faith, which protects him from criminal charges of bigamy. However..."

David paused, adjusting his glasses, looking anxiously between James and me.

"However what, David?" I demanded, my hands clenched tightly on my lap.

"Marcus Vance's legal team is arguing that Sarah’s marriage is void *ab initio*—invalid from the beginning. If the judge agrees, Sarah has no legal claim to James’s assets, the house title is clouded, and Marcus’s legal team can subpoena every financial record, every private trust, and potentially challenge the legal adoption of Lily on the grounds that the adoptive parents' marital status was fraudulently misrepresented."

James slammed his fist onto the side table, rattling the coffee cups. "That's insane! Lily is our daughter! Sarah is my wife! I don't care about the Vance money! Marcus can have every cent of Julian's dirty blood money! Let him take it!"

"He can't take it unless Claire relinquishes it," Claire’s calm, razor-sharp voice cut through the room. She was sitting by the French doors, reviewing a stack of Swiss bank transfers. "And if I relinquish it, Marcus’s first move will be to bankrupt James through endless retaliatory civil lawsuits to silence any exposure of the Vance family's offshore laundering network. That network holds Emma's trust funds and the evidence that could put Marcus in prison for life."

"Then what do we do?" Emma asked, her voice tight with suppressed rage.

Claire stood up, setting her papers on the table. She looked at me, then at James.

"We fight him on two fronts," Claire said with chilling clarity. "James and I must file for an immediate, expedited retroactive dissolution of our Vermont marriage based on desertion and fraud. Simultaneously, I will transfer fifty-one percent of my inherited voting shares in Vance Bio-Holdings into an irrevocable trust in Emma’s name, with Sarah appointed as the sole legal trustee."

I stared at her in utter disbelief. "Me? Why me?"

Claire walked over and stopped before my chair. She looked down at me with an intensity that stripped away every layer of pride and doubt.

"Because James’s heart chose you," Claire said softly, her voice filled with an undeniable, tragic nobility. "And because in the last two years, you fought for a child that wasn't yours, you embraced a daughter who arrived out of nowhere, and you held this family together when it was tearing at the seams. You are the only person in this room Marcus cannot intimidate, and the only one Emma trusts completely."
