Chapter 9 - The Nursery Window

The snow fell softly against the large bay windows of the Evanston craftsman home.

Inside the nursery, painted in soft sage green, everything was ready. The crib was assembled, the mobile of little wooden stars gently spun in the warm draft of the heater, and a rocking chair sat comfortably by the window, draped in a hand-knitted cream blanket.

Susan Harper sat downstairs in the kitchen, quietly stirring a pot of chicken soup, while upstairs, Claire stood by the window, watching the snowflakes drift down from the gray Chicago sky.

Her contractions had started gently an hour ago.

Dr. Lauren Hayes had already been notified. Everything was calm, organized, and entirely under control—just the way Claire liked her numbers.

She rested both hands on her swollen belly, feeling a powerful, reassuring kick from within.

"Almost time, Lily," Claire whispered to the empty room, a serene smile gracing her lips. "We're ready for you."

Her phone buzzed on the wooden dresser. She picked it up, expecting a call from her mother or the doctor. Instead, it was an email notification from the SEC compliance division.

*Subject: Case Closure - Calder Rowe Forensic Audit.*

*Status: Fully Resolved. Asset Restitution Complete. Clean Slate.*

Claire swiped the notification away without a second thought. She didn't need to read the details. The numbers finally balanced out. Every debit had been accounted for, every fraudulent entry erased, and every traitor removed from the ledger of her life.

She turned off the screen, placed her phone on the dresser, and walked slowly down the stairs to join her mother, stepping into a brand-new chapter of her life with absolute grace and unshakeable strength.
