Chapter 2 - The Digital Trap

Three weeks earlier, Claire had realized her husband was a stranger.

Sitting at her kitchen island with a glowing laptop screen illuminating her exhausted face, she scrolled through the server logs of Calder Rowe Development. As the former financial controller, she knew the architecture of the company’s internal network better than anyone—including the IT director who had supposedly signed off on the security updates.

The $186,400 wire transfer to a shell company named *Apex Management Solutions* was just the tip of the iceberg. Digging deeper, Claire discovered a sprawling web of fraudulent invoices spanning nine months—dating all the way back to when she first announced her pregnancy.

Mason hadn't just been cheating on her with Brooke Ellis. He had been using her name as a digital shield. Because Claire was legally the financial controller until her maternity leave officially began, every unauthorized transaction bore her electronic signature. If the audit hit, the feds would come for her first.

"You're working too late," a voice had startled her from behind that night.

Mason stood in the doorway of the kitchen, holding a glass of ice water. His eyes flicked to the glowing screen of her laptop.

"I'm just reconciling some personal insurance forms, Mason," Claire had lied smoothly, her heart pounding against her ribs. It was the first time she had ever deliberately deceived him.

"Leave it," he had said, walking over and resting a heavy hand on her shoulder. His touch, once comforting, now felt like the coils of a python. "You need to rest for Lily. Remember what the doctor said."

"I remember," she murmured, closing the laptop lid just enough to put the webcam out of view while keeping the terminal window active in the background.

She had already copied the encrypted logs onto an encrypted thumb drive and mailed a duplicate to her trusted former mentor at the SEC, alongside a detailed forensic report outlining Mason’s systemic looting of Calder Rowe's expansion funds. She hadn't gone to the police directly because she knew Mason had friends in the local precinct—friends he played golf with, friends who drank at the downtown country club.

Instead, she had gone straight to federal oversight.

And now, standing in the middle of the Lakeshore Grand ballroom, watching her husband being shoved toward the exit by federal agents, Claire felt the crushing weight of betrayal lift just enough for her to draw a full breath.

"You ruined everything!" Mason screamed, thrashing against Detective Cruz as they hauled him toward the service doors. His face was purple with rage, his carefully cultivated corporate charm completely shattered. He glared at Claire like she was a monster. "I gave you everything! You selfish bitch!"

Brooke Ellis bolted from the room, her designer heels clicking frantically against the marble as she fled into the night. Diane Bennett shrieked, collapsing dramatically into the arms of a terrified waiter.

Agent Vance lingered behind for a moment, walking back over to Claire. He pulled a white handkerchief from his pocket and offered it to her.

"Are you alright, Mrs. Bennett?" Vance asked quietly, his eyes filled with professional respect. "That was a hell of a kick."

Claire exhaled slowly, sliding her phone into her pocket and resting both hands over her protective belly. Little Lily gave a reassuring kick from within, as if signaling that mother and daughter were safe.

"I've been practicing my balance, Agent Vance," Claire said calmly. "And for the record, my lawyer will be in touch regarding the recovery of my pension funds."

"I'm sure she will," Vance smiled faintly. "We have tech teams executing search warrants at your residence and his office right now. You might want to go somewhere quiet. It’s going to be a very long night."

Claire watched as the heavy double doors swung shut behind her disgraced husband. The jazz quartet, completely paralyzed by the spectacle, finally began to pack up their instruments. The elite guests whispered among themselves, their champagne flutes untouched.

Claire turned on her heel and walked out of the ballroom, her head held high, ready for whatever came next.
