Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Table

The mahogany boardroom of Calder Rowe Development smelled of old leather, expensive espresso, and quiet panic.
The stock plunge had stabilized slightly following Arthur Sterling’s aggressive PR campaign, but the atmosphere around the executive table was thick with tension. Ten board members sat in high-backed leather chairs, their eyes fixed on the silver-haired interim CEO as he stood at the head of the table, clicking through a slide presentation.
"As you can see," Arthur Sterling said smoothly, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses, "despite the regrettable incident involving Mr. Bennett, the company’s core infrastructure remains sound. If we pass this restructuring resolution today, we can insulate our primary accounts from further federal scrutiny."
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the table. Several board members reached for their fountain pens, ready to sign.
"I object," a calm, clear voice echoed from the double doors at the back of the boardroom.
Every head snapped around.
The heavy oak doors swung wide open. Claire Bennett walked in.
She wore an elegant, tailored emerald-green maternity dress that hugged her seven-month pregnant frame with unmistakable dignity. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional chignon, and her eyes were as cold and sharp as surgical steel.
Flanking her on either side were Agent David Vance and Director Helen Vance, their federal badges glinting under the recessed ceiling lights.
Arthur Sterling’s face drained of color. For a fraction of a second, his hands gripped the edge of the mahogany podium so tightly his knuckles turned white. Then, he forced a warm, grandfatherly smile to his face.
"Claire, my dear," Arthur said, spreading his hands in a welcoming gesture. "What a surprise. I wasn't aware you were cleared to return to the office."
"I'm not here for an office visit, Arthur," Claire said, her voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. She walked right up to the end of the long mahogany table, stopping five feet from the CEO. "I’m here to audit your exit strategy."
"Now see here," a burly board member named Henderson protested, standing up. "Mrs. Bennett is no longer an employee of Calder Rowe! She has no legal standing in this boardroom!"
"Actually, Mr. Henderson, she does," Director Helen Vance stepped forward, flashing her federal ID card directly into the board member’s face. "Director Helen Vance, U.S. Financial Crimes Task Force. Under federal statute 104-B, until a formal transition of corporate controllership is countersigned by the SEC, Mrs. Bennett retains active compliance oversight."
Arthur forced a chuckle, though a thin sheen of sweat now glistened on his forehead. "This is absurd. Agent Vance, whatever grievances Mrs. Bennett has regarding her disgraced ex-husband—"
"This has nothing to do with Mason," Claire interrupted, pulling a certified document from her leather portfolio and sliding it across the polished mahogany table directly toward Arthur. "This is about *Sterling Holdings*, registered in the British Virgin Islands, funneling three point four million dollars out of Calder Rowe’s expansion reserves over the last thirty-six months."
The room erupted into chaos. Board members shouted over one another, papers rustled frantically, and Henderson stared at Arthur in sheer disbelief.
"That's a fabrication!" Arthur barked, his grandfatherly facade completely shattering, revealing the desperate criminal underneath. "She's vindictive! She's trying to tank the company out of spite!"
"The routing numbers match your personal Cayman account, Arthur," Claire said quietly, leaning forward slightly. "I audited the ledger at 3:00 AM. Every wire transfer bears your personal authorization override code—the master key you gave Mason to ruin, thinking he’d take the fall for your entire empire."
Arthur stared at her, his chest heaving, his mouth slightly open. He realized in that exact moment that the game was over. He had underestimated the wrong woman.
Agent Vance stepped up beside Arthur, pulling a pair of steel cuffs from his belt. "Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. Please place your hands behind your back."

As the heavy steel cuffs clicked onto the interim CEO’s wrists, Claire turned away from the table, exhaling a long, steady breath. The corporate nightmare was finally, truly over.
