Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Yard

Three weeks later, the snow began to fall over Chicago, dusting the rooftops of Evanston with a pristine blanket of white.

Inside the federal correctional facility downtown, the visitor booths were cold, gray, and endlessly depressing. Mason Bennett sat in the exact same orange jumpsuit, staring across the acrylic partition at his former wife.

He looked older. The arrogant spark in his eyes was permanently extinguished, replaced by a hollow, haunted look of profound regret.

"They gave Arthur fifteen years," Mason said quietly through the plastic telephone receiver, his voice cracking. "Max security. No parole."

Claire sat on the other side, her coat unzipped to reveal her full, eight-month pregnant belly. She looked radiant, her skin glowing with health and peace.

"I know," Claire replied calmly. "The board reinstated my full pension retroactively, and Calder Rowe appointed a new, ethical executive board. The company is rebuilding."

Mason swallowed hard, a tear finally escaping the corner of his eye and rolling down his pale cheek. "Claire... I am so sorry. For all of it. For Brooke, for the lies, for trying to... trying to put my sins on your shoulders."

Claire looked at him for a long, silent moment. There was no hatred left in her heart—only a profound, distant pity. Anger required energy, and Claire had channeled every ounce of her energy into her daughter, her future, and her peace of mind.

"I forgive you, Mason," Claire said softly, her voice steady and clear. "Not because you deserve it, but because I refuse to carry your poison around for the rest of my life. But we are done. Completely done."

Mason closed his eyes, his shoulders shaking as he let out a choked sob. "Can I... will you ever let me see her? When she's born?"

Claire stood up slowly from her chair, adjusting her coat and resting a protective hand over her daughter.

"When Lily asks about her father," Claire said, looking directly into Mason’s weeping eyes, "I will tell her the truth. That he made terrible choices, and that actions have consequences. Beyond that... goodbye, Mason."

She hung up the telephone receiver, turned her back on him for the final time, and walked out of the prison into the crisp, beautiful winter air.
