Chapter 6 - The Missing Ledger

Claire stepped back, holding the door wide open. "Come in, Agent Vance. Is there a problem with the asset seizure?"

"Quite the opposite," Vance replied, stepping into the sunlit foyer. He gestured to the woman beside him. "Claire, this is Director Helen Vance of the federal financial crimes task force—no relation, unfortunately for her."

Director Helen Vance offered a tight, professional smile and extended a hand. Claire shook it firmly.

"We've been auditing the offshore accounts tied to *Apex Management Solutions*," Helen began, opening the manila envelope as they walked into the bright, airy living room. "When we raided Brooke Ellis’s downtown apartment last week, we recovered her encrypted laptop. It took our forensic tech team a few days to crack the password, but when they did, we found something unexpected."

She pulled out a printed bank statement and handed it to Claire.

Claire scanned the numbers instinctively. Her eyes narrowed. "This isn't Calder Rowe money."

"Spot on," Helen said, crossing her arms. "That account belongs to a shell corporation registered in the British Virgin Islands called *Sterling Holdings*. And the primary shareholder isn't Mason Bennett."

Claire looked up sharply from the paper. "Who is it?"

"Arthur Sterling," Agent Vance answered gravely. "The interim CEO of Calder Rowe."

The room seemed to drop ten degrees. Claire stared at the paper, her mind racing through years of corporate hierarchy, board meetings, and quarterly expansions. Arthur Sterling—the kindly old mentor who had handed Mason his first promotion, the grandfatherly figure who had publicly defended Claire on national television.

"Arthur," Claire whispered, shaking her head in disbelief. "That’s impossible. Arthur has been with Calder Rowe for thirty years. He’s a multi-millionaire."

"People with ten million often want twenty," Helen replied coldly. "Mason wasn't the mastermind behind the embezzlement scheme. He was the fall guy. Arthur set up the infrastructure three years ago to siphon development funds away from public audits. When the internal compliance alarms started going off six months ago, Arthur needed someone close to the financial terminals to take the hit if the SEC came knocking."

"And he used Mason's greed against him," Claire realized aloud, the pieces falling into place with terrifying clarity. "Arthur promised Mason the COO position permanently if he handled the operational side of the transfers—and Arthur supplied the admin backdoor keys."

"Exactly," Agent Vance nodded. "Mason thought he was pulling off a brilliant corporate heist, but he was just a pawn in a much larger game. When Mason tried to frame you, he thought he was protecting himself—not realizing Arthur had already set up *him* to take 100% of the federal blame."

Claire walked over to the large bay window, looking out over the peaceful Evanston street. The autumn wind blew fallen leaves across the manicured lawn. Her mind, trained to find patterns in chaos, suddenly saw the grand design of the betrayal. Mason hadn't just destroyed their marriage; he had willingly walked into a shark tank thinking he was the apex predator.

"What do you need from me?" Claire asked, turning back to the federal agents.

Helen Vance pulled a second document from the manila envelope and laid it on the coffee table.

"Arthur is calling an emergency board meeting tomorrow morning to push through a massive restructuring package that will liquidate remaining assets and effectively bury the forensic trail permanently," Helen said, her eyes locking onto Claire's. "We have enough for an indictment, but we don't have the final authorization signature to freeze his personal holdings before he transfers them offshore."

Helen pointed a manicured finger at the signature line at the bottom of the document.

"Only a former Financial Controller with active system clearance credentials can legally trigger an emergency financial hold on the board's primary trust account," Helen said quietly. "And your digital signature hasn't been revoked yet."

Claire looked down at the signature line. The circle had closed. The trap was set once more—only this time, she wasn't the target. She was the executioner.
