Chapter 1 - The First Domino

The shattering of the two champagne glasses cut through the frantic murmurs of the ballroom like a knife. Silence descended upon the two hundred elite guests of the Lakeshore Grand, freezing them in place. The ambient jazz music had long since died away, replaced by the heavy, suffocating weight of scandal.
Mason Bennett slowly rose from the marble floor, his right hand pressed against his chest where Claire’s heel had struck him. His breathing was heavy, his tailored suit jacket slightly rumpled. But as he looked up, his expression defied the shock of the room.
He didn't look angry. He looked relieved.
Claire stood rooted to the spot, her left hand instinctively shielding her seven-month pregnant belly, while her right hand gripped her phone so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Adrenaline rushed through her veins, a cold, sharp shock that made her fingers tingle.
The six individuals who had just walked through the grand double doors advanced toward the center of the room. Leading the pack was Agent David Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a man Claire recognized from corporate compliance seminars Calder Rowe had hosted the previous year. Beside him stood Detective Sarah Cruz of the Chicago Police Department’s White-Collar Crime Division.
Mason offered a tight, almost imperceptible nod to Agent Vance. The trap was sprung. The final move had been made.
"Agent Vance," Mason said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. He pointed a steady finger directly at Claire. "Thank God you're here. That’s her. Claire Bennett. She embezzled nearly two hundred thousand dollars from Calder Rowe, and she’s trying to flee."
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Brooke Ellis, standing near the edge of the stage, pressed a manicured hand to her mouth, though her eyes gleamed with undisguised triumph. In the front row, Mason’s mother, Diane Bennett, shook her head with theatrical disappointment, dabbing a dry eye with a lace handkerchief.
"Claire Bennett," Agent Vance called out, his boots clicking rhythmically against the polished marble as he strode forward, pulling an open folder from beneath his arm. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, wire fraud, and the falsification of financial documents."
Claire didn't move. She couldn't. Not because she was guilty, but because the absurdity of the moment paralyzed her brain. The forged payment authorization for $186,400, the missing files on her home computer, the late-night hushed phone calls—they weren't just signs of an unraveling marriage. They were the scaffolding of a meticulously constructed frame job.
And Mason had built it.
Agent Vance stopped three feet away from Claire, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Please turn around and place your hands behind your back, Mrs. Bennett."
Claire looked from the glinting handcuffs to Mason’s smug, triumphant face. Then, she looked directly into Agent Vance’s eyes.
"You're arresting the wrong person," Claire said, her voice steady, ringing with a cold authority that caused Vance to momentarily pause.
"Ma'am, you can make your statement at the precinct," Vance replied, stepping closer.
"I won't need a statement at the precinct," Claire countered, lifting her phone. "Because the signature on the $186,400 wire transfer was forged using an outdated vector from my old terminal. And I have the metadata showing exactly which IP address accessed my private file directory at 2:14 AM three days ago."
Mason’s triumphant smile faltered for a fraction of a second. His eyes darted to Vance.
Agent Vance looked down at the official arrest warrant, then back up at Claire. But instead of lifting the handcuffs, he walked right past her.
The entire ballroom collectively held its breath.
Agent Vance didn't stop until he was standing directly in front of Mason Bennett.
"Mason Bennett," Agent Vance announced, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy to commit fraud, and obstruction of justice."
Mason stumbled backward, his face draining of all color. "What? No—there’s been a mistake! She’s the one! Look at the warrants!"
Detective Cruz stepped up beside Vance, a pair of heavy steel cuffs already unlatched. She grabbed Mason by the expensive silk of his suit sleeve and yanked his arms behind his back.

"The warrant was amended twenty minutes ago, Mr. Bennett," Detective Cruz said smoothly, snapping the cuffs onto his wrists with a sharp *click*. "Turns out, digital forensics can tell the difference between a wife’s office terminal and a husband’s home-office backdoor access. Game over."
