Chapter 55 - The Midnight Lockout

The heavy iron doors of Maplewood Court had been forced open by the time Marcus and I arrived. In the central foyer, the sound of drilling echoed from the basement stairwell like a dentist’s drill grinding against bone.
Richard sat on the front porch steps wrapped in a wool blanket, surrounded by two private guards Julian had posted outside. My father looked fragile, but when he saw me, he stood up, his eyes blazing with a rekindled fire.
"They went down to the cellar, Lauren," Richard said, his voice hoarse. "They pushed me out. The sheriff left two hours ago, claiming it was a civil matter, and Julian brought in a demolition crew."
"Stay here with Marcus," I told him, marching straight past the private guards.
One of the guards reached out to grab my shoulder. "Ma'am, the property is currently under private inspection—"
Marcus stepped between us, catching the guard’s wrist in a vise grip and twisting it downward with brutal efficiency. The guard grunted in pain, dropping to his knees.
"Touch her again and you leave this mountain in an ambulance," Marcus said softly, his voice devoid of emotion. The other guard immediately took a step back, raising his hands.
I didn't wait. I descended the spiral stone stairs into the wine cellar, where the air was cold, damp, and smelled of pulverized limestone.
Julian stood near the far back wall, where the centuries-old oak racks had been ripped away and tossed aside like kindling. Behind the racks, exposed by a commercial pneumatic drill, was a massive brushed-steel safe door embedded directly into the solid granite bedrock. A digital keypad flashed red on the console.
"You're making a mess of my house, brother," I called out over the hum of the portable generator.
Julian spun around, wiping sweat and stone dust from his forehead. He held a high-torque concrete saw in his gloved hands.
"It won't be your house for much longer, Lauren," Julian sneered, turning off the generator. The sudden silence in the subterranean vault was suffocating. "Mother told you about the safe, didn't she? Did she tell you the code?"
"She told me you're broke," I said flatly, walking down the stone corridor toward him. "She told me you owe Vesper Capital twenty million dollars, and if you don't crack this door before midnight tomorrow, they’re going to seize your Swiss accounts and leave you with nothing."
Julian’s face twitched. The suave, arrogant Oxford persona cracked, revealing the terrified, cornered animal underneath.
"She lied," Julian snapped, but his voice lacked conviction. "This vault contains what rightfully belongs to Arthur Montgomery's true family. You took everything from my father. You ruined his name. You threw my mother into prison. This is restitution!"
May you like
"Arthur Montgomery was a criminal who embezzled millions from his own partners," I said, stopping three paces from the vault door. "And the moment you drill through that steel, you trigger a silent alarm tied directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's financial crimes task force. That safe isn't grandfathered into your civil deed, Julian. It's listed on a sealed federal seizure warrant issued this morning."
