Chapter 39 - The Final Restitution

"Lauren, please... blood is thicker than water," Eleanor pleaded, her hands trembling as they gripped the cold iron. "You have billions now! Your father told me! You have billions! How can you leave your own mother out on the street over a one-point-two-million-dollar house? I brought you into this world!"

I looked at her, searching inside myself for any lingering trace of anger, bitterness, or hatred.

There was none. There was only a profound, liberating emptiness.

"You didn't care about blood when you served me an eviction notice, Eleanor," I said, my voice steady, calm, and absolute. "You didn't care about blood when you partnered with Arthur Montgomery to steal my home. You didn't care about blood when you toasted his victory while I sat alone in a cold living room wondering how I would survive."

"I made a mistake!" she screamed, dropping to her knees on the damp sidewalk, sobbing into the dirt. "I was weak! Arthur seduced me with promises of wealth! Please, Lauren, just let me stay in the guest cottage! Just give me an allowance!"

"You won't starve, Eleanor," I said coldly. "The Vance Global Trust has established a court-supervised living trust for you. You will be provided with a small one-bedroom apartment in Eastern Washington, forty miles from any major city. You will receive fifteen hundred dollars a month for groceries and basic utilities. You will never set foot in Seattle, you will never touch a single luxury brand, and if you ever contact me, my father, or this property again, the trust will revoke even that, and you will serve the remainder of your life in federal prison."

Eleanor stared up at me, her mouth opening and closing like a dying fish, realizing with agonizing clarity that her golden age was over. The manipulation, the guilt-tripping, the social posturing—none of it worked anymore.

"What about Julian?" she whispered hoarsely.

"Julian has been offered a job on one of our cargo container ships in the North Sea," I replied. "Twelve-hour shifts, manual labor, minimum wage. If he wants to eat, he will work for it, just like I worked twelve hours a day while you two lived off my father's ghost."

I turned my back on her and walked toward the grand front doors of Maplewood Court.

Behind me, the electronic gates closed with a heavy, final mechanical chime, shutting Eleanor Vance out of my life forever.
