Chapter 14 - The Smear Campaign

The retaliation began at 6:00 AM on Thursday morning.

My phone woke me with an avalanche of notifications. Text messages from former high school classmates, direct messages on LinkedIn from corporate clients, and dozens of alerts from local community groups on Facebook.

Eleanor had gone scorched-earth on social media.

Under the title *"THE TRUTH ABOUT LAUREN VANCE: HOW MY DAUGHTER ROBBED HER DYING GRANDMOTHER AND DESTROYED HER BROTHER'S LIFE,"* she had published an eight-minute video that had already accumulated over two hundred thousand views, four thousand shares, and thousands of outraged comments.

In the video, Eleanor sat in a dimly lit room, sobbing without tears, clutching a framed photograph of our deceased father.

*"I am speaking out today as a heartbroken mother,"* Eleanor cried into the camera, dabbing her dry eyes with a monogrammed handkerchief. *"My oldest daughter, Lauren, took advantage of my mother’s dementia to seize control of our family’s ancestral property on Fourth Avenue. She forced my son Nathan—who worked sixteen-hour days to support this family—into fraudulent debt agreements. She kicked me out into the street, and two nights ago, she crashed Nathan’s engagement party to slander him in front of his fiancée's family, destroying his wedding and his mental health. She lives in a luxury 1.2-million-dollar house on Maplewood Court paid for with stolen family inheritance while her own mother cannot afford groceries..."*

The comment section was a cesspool of mob fury:

- *"What an evil monster! Someone call Adult Protective Services on this Lauren Vance!"*

- *"Boycott her consulting firm! Fire her!"*

- *"People who steal from elderly grandparents deserve prison. Post her address!"*

By 8:30 AM, my consulting firm's Google business page had been hit with over three hundred one-star reviews. By 9:15 AM, my biggest corporate client, a regional logistics provider, called my office to temporarily suspend our retainer pending "clarification of public reputational concerns."

Then came the physical escalation.

At 10:00 AM, my security system alert chimed. Three local "influencers" and two self-proclaimed neighborhood activists were standing at the foot of my driveway on Maplewood Court with cardboard signs and megaphones, livestreaming to TikTok.

"We are live outside the million-dollar house of Lauren Vance, the elder abuser!" a young man with a microphone shouted at my front porch. "Come out and face the public, Lauren! Return the deed to your mother!"

Neighbors were stepping out onto their manicured lawns, whispering and pointing phones at my house.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but I did not open the door, nor did I draw the blinds. Panic was exactly what Eleanor wanted. She wanted me to break down, call her weeping, and offer the deed to Maplewood Court in exchange for taking down the video.

Instead, I sat down at my desk, opened my laptop, and called Richard Vance.

"Richard," I said calmly. "Are you watching the stream?"

"I’m already drafting the emergency injunction," Richard answered, his voice cold with professional fury. "Defamation per se, intentional interference with contractual relations, tortious interference with prospective business advantage, and felony cyberharassment under Washington state law."

"That takes weeks in court, Richard," I said. "Public perception operates in hours. We fight fire with sunlight."

"What do you have in mind?"

May you like

"Eleanor forgot that every single meeting at Vance & Sterling was recorded on closed-circuit video with two-party consent clauses signed in Nathan’s probation agreement," I said. "And she forgot Grandma Evelyn is fully compos mentis and has had enough of her daughter’s games."
