Chapter 13 - The Trap Closes

The aftermath inside the Rainier Club salon was swift, violent, and devastatingly public.
Arthur Montgomery slowly closed the folder and handed it back to me. He didn't raise his voice; people with that kind of power rarely do.
"Chloe," Arthur said without taking his eyes off Nathan. "Take off the ring."
"Daddy!" Chloe gasped, tears instantly welling in her heavily lined eyes. "Nathan told me he was the managing partner! He told me Lauren was just his accountant who was jealous of his success!"
"Take. Off. The. Ring." Arthur repeated. Every word dropped like lead weights on the hardwood floor.
Chloe stripped the two-carat diamond solitaire from her finger and hurled it at Nathan’s chest. The diamond bounced off his satin lapel and clattered into a silver ice bucket near the bar. "You disgusting little liar!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking through the quiet club. "You used me! You were going to use my family’s trust fund to pay off your debts!"
"Chloe, wait, baby, please!" Nathan dropped to his knees, frantically fishing through the melting ice in the bucket to retrieve the ring. "It’s a misunderstanding! Lauren is lying! She forged those documents, she hates me!"
"Enough," Arthur Montgomery snapped. He turned to Eleanor, who was trembling violently against the wall, her designer purse clutched against her chest like a shield. "Mrs. Vance, you signed a preliminary prenuptial financial declaration yesterday in my attorney's office. You affirmed under penalty of perjury that Nathan was the seventy percent beneficiary of the Fourth Avenue trust."
Eleanor’s voice was barely a squeak. "Arthur... it was supposed to be his inheritance. Evelyn is ninety-one years old! When she passes, it belongs to Nathan anyway!"
"Grandma Evelyn’s will leaves her entire residual estate to the Seattle Children’s Hospital foundation, Eleanor," I said, loud enough for every guest and server in the room to hear. "She modified her will two weeks ago after Nathan tried to drain her assisted living fund. Nathan gets one dollar. You get nothing."
Arthur turned to his head of security standing near the heavy oak doors. "Remove these two from the premises. If either Nathan or Eleanor Vance steps foot on any Montgomery property or contacts Chloe again, file immediate harassment charges and deliver their financial disclosures to the District Attorney."
"Arthur, please!" Eleanor wailed as two large security guards took her by the elbows. "We can fix this! Nathan is a good boy! Lauren is a monster, she destroyed our family!"
Her shrieks echoed down the carpeted hallway as they dragged Nathan and her toward the service elevators.
The dining room fell into a heavy, awkward quiet. Arthur Montgomery adjusted his cufflinks and looked at me with renewed respect.
"You have steel in your spine, young lady," Arthur said, nodding slightly. "Most people would have folded under their mother's pressure."
"My mother taught me an expensive lesson early in life, Mr. Montgomery," I replied, packing my papers back into my portfolio. "Never let a thief hold the keys to your house, especially if they share your last name."
"A wise philosophy," Arthur said. "However, you should keep your guard up. A wounded predator with nothing left to lose is always the most dangerous."
I thanked him and walked out into the cold Seattle night. Arthur was right. Eleanor had lost Nathan’s golden ticket to high society, and her humiliation was absolute. When a narcissist's grand delusion is shattered in public, their next move is never surrender.
