Chapter 38 - Homecoming to Maplewood

Two weeks later, a crisp autumn sun warmed the neighborhood of Whispering Pines.

The fallen maple leaves created a carpet of vibrant gold and scarlet along the freshly repaved driveway of Maplewood Court. The scars of the tactical raid had been entirely erased; the French doors were replaced with reinforced bullet-resistant glass, the iron gates polished and fortified with an impenetrable security grid.

A gleaming black town car pulled up to the curb.

The neighbors, who had gossiped maliciously for months about my mother's demands and whispered rumors that I was an ungrateful daughter clinging to an unearned house, stood behind their manicured hedges in stunned silence.

The town car's door opened, and I stepped out.

I was no longer the exhausted, stressed-out daughter carrying piles of legal paperwork from the county clerk’s office. I wore a tailored cashmere coat, dark sunglasses, and walked with the unmistakable poise of a woman who held the financial reins of a global conglomerate.

Behind me, two estate attorneys and Marcus Hale carried leather briefcases into the foyer.

From across the street, a pathetic figure emerged from behind an overgrown rhododendron bush.

It was Eleanor.

She was unrecognizable. Stripped of her designer jewelry, her platinum-blonde hair unkempt, wearing a wrinkled trench coat that looked like it had been bought from a thrift store, she stumbled toward my iron gates with tears streaking through her smudged mascara.

"Lauren!" she wailed, clutching the black iron bars. "Lauren, please! Look at your mother! They took everything! They froze my social security! I have nowhere to sleep tonight! Julian won't even answer my calls!"

I stopped at the stone threshold, turning around slowly. Marcus stepped forward to block her, but I raised a gentle hand, telling him to stand down.

I walked down the paved path, stopping three feet from the gate, looking directly into the desperate, ruined eyes of the woman who had birthed me—and who had tried to devour my life whole.
