Chapter 52 - The Zurich Coup

The encrypted satellite phone in Henrik’s tactical harness began to vibrate violently.
Henrik pulled it out, checked the caller ID, and looked at me with raised eyebrows. "It’s Zurich. Julian Vance himself."
I took the receiver. "Speak, Vance."
"Miss Carter," Julian Vance’s cultured voice sounded through the line, crisp and completely devoid of the panic unraveling on Main Street. "I trust Victoria Sterling has made an absolute nuisance of herself outside your diner."
"She’s about five minutes away from being arrested by the town marshal," I replied coldly. "And you have about sixty seconds to explain why Vanguard Apex is attempting to seize assets your father forfeited forty years ago."
Julian Vance let out a low, appreciative chuckle over the satellite link. "Victoria Sterling doesn't work for me, Sylvia. She works for the London dissident faction of our board—the faction Arthur Carter sold his soul to. They believed Harold Carter was dead, his keys lost, and that they could stage a hostile takeover of the entire Vance-Rothschild Consortium by foreclosing on Arthur’s fabricated collateral."
"Then call your wolves off," I ordered.
"I can't call them off, Sylvia," Vance said smoothly. "Under Consortium charter rules, only the holder of the fifty-one percent founder’s share can issue a summary executive termination. That isn't me. It never was. It was Harold Carter. And now, under Article 12 of the Swiss succession charter you are currently holding in your hands... it is you."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "What are you asking me to do?"
"Open the encrypted terminal in the maritime container," Vance instructed, his voice dropping into razor-sharp seriousness. "Connect Henrik’s satellite uplink to the secondary hard drive. Broadcast the master authentication hash to the Swiss Federal Banking Authority and the Board of Governors in Zurich. Do it now, Sylvia. Execute the founder's veto. If you don't, Victoria Sterling’s London backers will complete the hostile liquidation of your grandfather’s entire life's work before the markets open in Zurich."
I looked at Briana. Her face was set with iron resolve. The scared, spoiled sister who had bought designer rugs with my stolen Amazon card was completely gone. In her eyes was the unmistakable fire of Harold Carter.
"Do it, Sylvia," Briana said, nodding firmly. "End this. For Grandfather."
Henrik didn't hesitate. He stripped the shielding cover from the primary drive, snapped the military data cable into the terminal port, and handed me the authorization keypad.
On the screen, a single prompt blinked against a black background:
*CARTER MASTER OVERRIDE: ENTER BLOODLINE RECOVERY PROTOCOL.*
I took the silver key, unscrewed the hollow finial at the base of the handle, and removed the micro-chip hidden inside since 1989. I slid it into the terminal slot.
Then, with fingers that did not tremble, I typed Harold Carter’s birthdate and the coordinates of Margaret’s Diner into the command line.
*ENTER.*

The screen flashed brilliant green. Across the satellite link, Julian Vance drew a long, satisfied breath.
"Boardroom override confirmed, Miss Carter," Vance announced with cold triumph. "Victoria Sterling’s executive authority has just been permanently revoked. Her accounts are frozen. Her security contracts are canceled. And Vanguard Apex is officially liquidated."
