Chapter 38 - Safehouse on Lake Geneva

By 4:00 AM, we were inside a secure, stone-walled chalet tucked into the wooded shoreline of Lake Geneva. A fire crackled in the hearth, throwing warm amber light across heavy mahogany bookshelves and thick wool carpets.

Waiting for us was an elderly woman with silver hair pulled back in an immaculate bun, wearing a tailored charcoal sweater. Her name was Madame Christine Laurent, a retired senior notary who had managed Grandfather Carter’s European holdings for three decades before Arthur staged his internal family coup.

She handed Briana and me steaming mugs of spiced black tea without saying a word, her sharp hazel eyes taking in our bruised faces, torn coats, and snow-drenched boots.

"You look like your grandmother, Sylvia," Madame Laurent said softly, her French accent clipped and aristocratic. "She had the same stubborn jaw. The same refusal to be crushed by the Carter men."

"Did Arthur try to reach you?" I asked, wrapping both hands around the hot porcelain cup.

"Arthur has tried to reach me every week for ten years," she replied with a cold smile. "He offered bribes, then legal threats, then private security intimidation. He believes that because he forged your mother's signature on the Delaware shell company, he owns the global lineage. He does not know how your grandfather designed the trust."

She gestured toward the heavy antique table. I reached into my satchel, took out the silver skeleton key, and set it down. Beside it, I laid the handwritten note from the safe deposit box.

Madame Laurent picked up the key with white cotton gloves and held it under an illuminated jeweler’s loupe. She twisted the ornate finial. With a soft click, the base of the key telescoped outward, revealing a miniature micro-laser etched cylinder hidden inside the stem.

"The key opens Vault 714 at Banque Privée Vaneau on the Rue du Rhône," she said. "But the laser cylinder is what matters. It contains the primary cryptographic seed phrase for the 1998 Amazon pre-IPO founder trusts."

Briana gasped, nearly dropping her cup. "The Amazon stock... Arthur always claimed Grandfather sold it all during the dot-com crash to pay off corporate debts."

"Arthur lied to your mother, and your mother repeated the lie until she believed it herself," Madame Laurent said grimly. "Your grandfather never sold a single share. He locked them in an irrevocable Swiss sovereign custody trust, protected by a seventy-two-hour execution clause that would trigger the moment any unauthorized party attempted to liquidate the Delaware assets."

She looked straight at me. "When Arthur seized your diner and tried to foreclose on your life in New York, Sylvia, he triggered the tripwire. The entire fortune is waiting. But we have only five hours before the bank opens—and Arthur’s attorneys are already landing at Geneva Airport."
