Chapter 42 - The Boardroom Ambush

"Time's up," Director Meyer’s voice called from the doorway, taut and urgent. "Miss Carter, you need to come out now. Arthur’s counsel has served an emergency provisional injunction from the Zurich Cantonal Court."

Briana and I walked out of the vault, the ledger and documents secured inside my satchel. As the massive titanium door swung shut behind us, two armed guards escorted us back up the private elevator into the executive wing.

The doors parted onto Boardroom Three.

Sitting at the center of a twenty-foot glass conference table was Uncle Arthur. He wore a six-thousand-dollar bespoke charcoal suit, but the illusion of untouchable power was cracking. His hair was disheveled, his collar unbuttoned, and dark shadows circled his bloodshot eyes. Flanking him were four corporate attorneys with open briefcases and tablets.

When Arthur saw me walking in holding the black ledger, his face flushed crimson.

"Sylvia!" he snarled, slamming his palm onto the glass table so hard a crystal water glass shattered. "Give that ledger to my counsel right now! You have no legal standing in this jurisdiction! You crossed an international border on forged documents!"

"Sit down, Arthur," I said quietly, taking a seat at the opposite end of the table.

Briana stood directly behind me, her arms crossed, staring down her uncle with unflinching defiance.

Arthur’s lead attorney, a razor-thin Swiss litigator, slid a paper across the table. "Miss Carter, we represent the Delaware General Partnership. Under American corporate jurisdiction, Mr. Arthur Carter holds full power of attorney over all Harold Carter assets. Your entry into Vault 714 constitutes industrial theft."

I didn't even look at the paper. I opened my satchel, took out the manila envelope stamped with the Swiss Federal Banking Commission seal, and slid the certified decree toward Director Meyer.

"Director Meyer," I said, my voice cutting through the tension like a scalpel. "Please read Article 9 of the Harold Carter Sovereign Trust."

Meyer picked up the document, adjusted his glasses, and read aloud: *"In the event of an attempted unauthorized hostile takeover by any secondary beneficiary, all Delaware corporate proxies are declared void ab initio. The primary heir, Sylvia Carter, possesses absolute right of immediate liquidation and public disclosure."*

Arthur jumped to his feet, knocking his leather chair backward. "That’s an invalid clause! You can’t liquidate! Do you have any idea what happens to the family empire if those assets hit the open market? It will trigger an international regulatory audit! Everything collapses!"

May you like

"That's the point, Arthur," I said. "You built an empire out of lies, fraud, and my mother’s cowardice. It collapses today."
