Chapter 34 - The Ghost in Geneva

The noise of the diner—the clatter of plates, the hum of conversation, Arthur's laughter echoing from the kitchen—seemed to drop to a distant whisper. I stared at the cream envelope resting between us on the polished tabletop.

"Erased from the records?" I asked, my voice barely audible. "Margaret was the sole controller of the Carter estate. My grandfather died in a factory accident in 1968. That’s what Dad was told his entire life."

"That’s what Evelyn told Arthur," Henrik corrected, his sharp gray eyes fixed on mine. "Because that’s what Julian Hastings instructed her to tell him. But Margaret Carter didn't build a forty-million-dollar financial empire in the 1970s by herself. A woman in that era couldn't even obtain a commercial line of credit without a male co-signatory or an institutional guarantor."

I picked up the envelope. The paper was heavy, textured, and cool to the touch. The wax seal was pristine, deep crimson, stamped with the twin-headed falcon.

"Who was he, Henrik?"

"His name was Thomas Vance," Henrik said.

I froze, the air catching in my throat. "Vance? That was Evelyn’s maiden name."

"Thomas Vance was Evelyn’s father," Henrik revealed, his tone measured and intense. "The man your mother claimed was a disgraced, bankrupt accountant who abandoned her family when she was eight years old. But according to the Swiss banking commission records unsealed this morning, Thomas Vance didn't abandon anyone. He was Margaret Carter’s primary financial architect."

Briana walked over, carrying a fresh pot of coffee, but stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the look on my face. She set the pot down on an empty tray and slid into the booth beside me, her eyes darting between Henrik and the sealed envelope.

"What's wrong? What happened?" Briana asked, her voice dropping into immediate concern. "Did Hastings file an appeal?"

"No," I said, my fingers tracing the wax emblem. "Henrik found a dormant account in Geneva. Belonging to our maternal grandfather. Thomas Vance."

Briana frowned, confusion creasing her brow. "Mom said her father died penniless in a county hospital in Ohio before we were born. She used to cry about it every Christmas to explain why she hated small towns."

"Evelyn lied about everything else; why would she tell the truth about her father?" Henrik said. "Thomas Vance didn't die in Ohio. In 1979, Thomas Vance faked his disappearance after discovering that the board of First National was planning to orchestrate a hostile takeover of Margaret’s holding company. He transferred eleven million dollars into a private numbered trust in Zurich—not to steal it, but to protect it from Julian Hastings."

"Then why did Evelyn work for Hastings?" Briana whispered, horrified. "Why would she take payoffs to destroy the very man her own father was trying to protect?"

"Because Hastings told Evelyn that her father had stolen that money from *her*," Henrik explained. "Hastings manipulated Evelyn’s lifelong greed and deep-seated resentment. He convinced an insecure, twenty-four-year-old Evelyn that Arthur Carter’s family had cheated her out of an inheritance. He turned her into an operative against her own father’s legacy by promising her that if she suppressed Arthur's claims, she would eventually receive the entirety of Thomas Vance’s offshore fortune."

"And Hastings kept the key the whole time," I realized, a sickening wave of revulsion washing over me. "He played both sides. He used my mother's jealousy to crush my father, while keeping the actual fortune locked away in Switzerland where neither of them could ever touch it."

"Exactly," Henrik nodded. "Until yesterday. When Hastings’s personal vault in Zurich was seized by the Swiss Federal Department of Finance, they found the master power-of-attorney document for the Vance trust."

I carefully slid my finger under the flap of the vellum envelope and broke the crimson wax seal.

Inside was a single sheet of heavy legal parchment, written in English and French, bearing the official embossed stamps of the Cantonal Bank of Geneva.

*To the Surviving Heirs of the Vance-Carter Protective Trust:*

*Notice of Mandatory Succession Assembly.*

*Account 004-Falcon-Omega contains unencumbered municipal holdings, precious metal certificates, and a primary shareholder proxy controlling 18% of the reconstituted North American Commerce Bank.*

*To execute full legal transfer and prevent automatic forfeiture to the Swiss Confederation, the designated beneficiaries—Sylvia Carter and Briana Carter—must present themselves in person at the Geneva Private Banking Chambers within seventy-two hours of this notice.*

"Seventy-two hours," Briana whispered, her eyes wide as she read the legal notice over my shoulder. "Sylvia... that's three days."

"There is a second document in that envelope," Henrik pointed out quietly.

I reached back inside the vellum sheath and pulled out a smaller, yellowed index card. It was dated just four days ago. The ink was fresh, written in an elegant, spidery hand that showed the unmistakable tremors of advanced age.

On the card was a handwritten message:

*Sylvia, Briana.*

*Your grandmother Margaret told me that truth is like water—it will eventually crack through any vault of stone.*

*Do not trust the Swiss authorities. Julian Hastings was not acting alone. The men who financed him in 1984 still sit on the board of the Zurich clearinghouse.*

*If you come to Geneva, come through the French border by rail. And bring the silver key.*

May you like

*— T.V.*

Briana let out a sharp, choked gasp, clamping her hand over her mouth. "T.V... Thomas Vance? He's... he's still alive?"
