Chapter 29 - The Shield We Forge

"Then we publish it first," I said.

Julian and Marcus both froze, staring at me as if I had lost my mind.

"Lauren," Julian said cautiously, "if you make her sequence public—"

"I don't mean her name. I don't mean her location," I said, my mind calculating with the rapid-fire precision of an emergency room triage. "The Council's power exists solely because they hoard medical supremacy. They want to sell eternal life to eighty billionaires while hunting my daughter like a laboratory animal. If the Telomerase-9 sequence becomes public-domain research—if every university, every children’s hospital, every cancer research institute in the world has the open-source code—her marrow is worthless to a syndicate."

Marcus's jaw slackened. "You’d be giving away the most valuable biological discovery of the twenty-first century."

"It’s not a discovery," I said, my voice ringing with fierce, unshakable conviction. "It’s a life. My daughter is not a patent. The moment she stops being a proprietary secret, the Sovereign Council has no market. Their leverage evaporates. They become nothing more than common criminals with nowhere left to sell."

Julian stared at me for a long, breathless moment. A slow, breathtaking grin spread across his face—a look of pure admiration.

"You really are a brilliant strategist, Dr. Vance."

"I took an oath, Julian," I said, leaning over the console. "First, do no harm. Second, protect your patient at all costs. Maya is my patient. And she is my daughter. Marcus, spool up the open-source bio-medical servers at MIT, Cambridge, and the Pasteur Institute. Let's show the Sovereign Council what happens when you try to privatize a human soul."

For the next ten hours, the compound hummed with digital warfare. We didn't run. We didn't hide behind Kevlar and concrete. We loaded the Council’s stolen patents, stripped of Maya’s personal identifiers, into open-source repositories worldwide.

By midnight, the broadcast had cleared. The scientific community exploded into a frenzy of peer-reviewed validation.
