Chapter 13 - The Anatomy of Betrayal

I stood three paces away from Chloe, keeping my hands visible, my heart hammering against my ribs like a caged beast. "Who gave you that bruise, Chloe? Was it Richard?"

Chloe choked back a ragged sob, pulling the collar of her damp trench coat higher to conceal the violent discoloration running down her neck. "Not Richard. Richard is too much of a coward to get his own hands dirty. It was the men he owes money to. Men from an offshore private equity syndicate called Apex Sovereign."

The name hit the cold air like a slab of lead. As head of trauma, I had sat in closed-door hospital foundation meetings where Apex Sovereign was whispered about—a ruthless private equity firm buying up distressed medical debt and hospital real estate across the Midwest.

"Why would an offshore equity syndicate care about my divorce?" I demanded, the rain drenching my hair.

"Richard didn't just embezzle from your joint marital accounts, Lauren!" Chloe gasped, trembling violently from the freezing cold. "Two years ago, he took out an eight-million-dollar mezzanine loan through Apex Sovereign to finance an unapproved experimental stem-cell clinic in the Cayman Islands. He forged your medical license, your surgical credentials, and your signature as the primary guarantor! When the clinic went belly up, the debt defaulted. Apex Sovereign doesn't just want Richard ruined—they want the Kelly estate. They want your family trust. They want Chicago Memorial’s research patents!"

The realization struck me like a surgical scalpel piercing straight to the bone. Richard’s affair with Chloe hadn't been a midlife crisis. It hadn't even been simple lust. Chloe had been an administrative coordinator in the hospital’s credentialing department. Richard had seduced her to steal my digital signatures, my board certifications, and the institutional access codes required to execute an eight-million-dollar international fraud scheme.

"And now?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet beneath the roar of the rain. "What did they promise you to sign that affidavit claiming I committed malpractice on you?"

"They told me if I perjured myself to get your license suspended, Richard would be granted temporary control of the marital assets and Maya's trust fund," Chloe whispered, her teeth chattering. "He promised to pay off Apex Sovereign, give me half a million dollars, and get my sister out of Illinois. But yesterday... yesterday I found Richard’s ledger in his safe deposit box. He never planned to pay them. He’s taking the liquidated cash and fleeing to Dubai on a private charter out of Gary, Indiana. He’s leaving me to take the perjury rap, and he’s leaving you and your baby to face Apex Sovereign’s enforcers alone."

A sudden beam of high-intensity halogen headlights rounded the entrance of the narrow alleyway, blinding us both.

A heavy black Lincoln Navigator accelerated aggressively down the slick asphalt, its engine roaring like a predator closing in on its kill. The vehicle wasn't braking—it was aiming straight for Chloe and me.

"Run!" I screamed, lunging forward and grabbing Chloe by the sleeve of her coat, dragging her violently toward the heavy steel fire door of the clinic.

Tires screeched against wet pavement. The heavy SUV slammed into the industrial metal dumpster right where Chloe had been standing two seconds prior, the impact ringing out like an exploding bomb. Metal crumpled; glass showered over the concrete.

Before the driver could reverse to line up another strike, the screech of another engine echoed through the storm. A silver Audi plowed into the side of the Lincoln, broadsiding it with savage, calculated force.

Julian Vance leaped out of the driver’s side of the Audi, a heavy iron tire iron gripped in his fist, his face etched with pure, primal fury. "Get inside the building! Now!" he bellowed.

The tinted window of the Lincoln rolled down an inch, the barrel of a semi-automatic handgun poking through the rain-streaked slit. Julian didn't flinch—he hurled the tire iron with pinpoint athletic precision through the driver's side window, shattering the glass into a thousand spiderweb fractures. The Lincoln’s engine revved wildly, the driver throwing the vehicle into reverse and speeding out of the alley into the Chicago night, leaving bumper fragments and oil slicked upon the pavement.

Julian sprinted to the fire door, his chest heaving, his rain-soaked shirt clinging to his shoulders. He grabbed both of my arms, his hands trembling as his eyes scanned me desperately from head to toe. "Are you hit? Lauren, look at me! Are you hurt?"

May you like

"I’m fine," I breathed, my hands shaking as I looked back at Chloe, who was curled in a fetal position against the damp brick floor. "I’m fine, Julian. But our custody hearing in seventy-two hours just turned into an international criminal hunt."
