Chapter 15 - The Viper’s Trap

The world fractured into shards of ice.

I didn't take off my surgical gown. I didn't wash the blood from my forearms. I tore out of the trauma bay like a lioness whose den had been set ablaze, ripping the mask from my face as I sprinted through the emergency department corridors.

"Lauren! Stop!" Julian was right behind me, sprinting down the hallway, knocking aside rolling IV poles as he pursued me toward the hospital exit. "You can't drive like this! Marcus is already en route with the tactical unit!"

"He has my daughter, Julian!" I screamed, rounding the corner toward the parking garage, my voice tearing through the quiet administrative wing. "He used Chloe as a diversion! He dumped her body knowing she would be brought to my trauma bay so I would be trapped in surgery while he took Maya!"

We burst into the subterranean parking garage. Julian shoved me into the passenger seat of his Audi, leaped behind the wheel, and threw the high-performance engine into gear. The tires shrieked against the concrete floor as the car rocketed out into the gray, rain-drowned Chicago streets, running red lights with his emergency physician strobe flashing on the dashboard.

My hands shook so violently I could barely unlock my phone. I dialed Elena at the nursery.

"Elena! Answer me!"

The voice on the other end was hysterical. "Dr. Kelly! A man posing as a court-appointed child welfare officer arrived with official state documentation and an armed bailiff! They showed a signed emergency custody order issued thirty minutes ago by Judge Abernathy! We refused to release Maya, but the bailiff had an armed escort! They took her out the rear fire exit!"

"A forged court order," I whispered, the phone slipping between my fingers. "He used Apex Sovereign’s corrupt legal network to produce an illegal judicial seizure."

Julian grabbed my hand, his grip crushing, grounding me against the terrifying void opening beneath my feet. "Marcus is on the line right now with the Chief of Police and the Presiding Judge of Cook County," Julian said, his eyes blazing with a lethal, cold fury as he navigated through dense traffic at eighty miles per hour. "Judge Abernathy never signed that order. It's a complete forgery. Richard is officially wanted for federal parental kidnapping and felony aggravated assault. The FBI has triggered an Amber Alert."

"Where would he go?" I choked out, tears of pure terror finally breaking through my rigid defenses. "Where can he run with a seven-month-old baby during an interstate dragnet?"

"The charter flight Chloe mentioned," Julian replied, his voice dropping into a hard, calculated register. "The private airfield in Gary, Indiana. It’s an unmonitored executive strip used by offshore shell companies. If he gets Maya onto a private jet crossing international airspace toward a non-extradition country, we will never see her again."

Julian hammered the gas pedal, the car swerving onto the southbound ramp of the Chicago Skyway, speeding toward the industrial border of Indiana beneath a sky the color of bruised iron.

My phone rang. The screen displayed an encrypted incoming video call.

I swiped the screen with trembling fingers.

Richard’s face filled the display. He was sitting in the plush leather cabin of a luxury executive jet, a glass of amber scotch resting on the armrest. In the seat next to him, strapped securely into an infant travel capsule, was Maya. She was clutching her favorite knitted rabbit, her thumb in her mouth, her wide eyes looking around the unfamiliar cabin with confused innocence.

"Hello, Lauren," Richard said smoothly, a sickening, triumphant smile spreading across his ruined, desperate face. "You should have signed the financial release when you had the chance."
