Chapter 12 - The Subpoena at Midnight

The conference room on the executive floor of Chicago Memorial smelled of stale espresso and legal briefs. Outside, the night sky was choked with gathering storm clouds, flashes of distant lightning illuminating the Chicago skyline. Marcus Vance, my seasoned legal counsel—and Julian’s older brother—slapped a heavy stack of transcripts onto the mahogany table.

"It’s an ambush, Lauren," Marcus said bluntly, loosening his silk tie. "Chloe isn't working alone. Richard found himself an aggressive criminal defense attorney backed by an anonymous third-party litigation fund. They’ve filed an emergency ex parte hearing for seventy-two hours from now. They are arguing that you weaponized your position as trauma chief to commit medical malpractice bordering on assault against Chloe, and that your eighty-hour work weeks make you an unfit, neglectful mother."

I leaned back in the leather chair, rubbing the bridge of my nose. The sheer audacity was breathtaking. "I saved that girl’s life," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "I repaired a grade-four splenic rupture while suffering from severe preeclampsia. I collapsed on the operating room floor thirty seconds after I closed her fascia! The entire surgical nursing staff, the anesthesiologist, and Dr. Vance were in that room. How can she claim I intentionally delayed care?"

Julian, sitting across from me with a cup of chamomile tea he had brewed for me an hour ago, leaned forward. His expression was taut, his jaw clutched tight. "She’s not trying to win a malpractice verdict, Lauren. They know that in a full civil trial, the surgical telemetry and heart monitor logs will exonerate you. Their goal is shock and awe. They want to generate enough public scandal to force the hospital board to place you on administrative leave. Once you are suspended and under investigation, Richard’s lawyer will file for temporary custody of Maya, claiming you are mentally unstable and legally compromised."

"And if Richard gets temporary custody," I whispered, the room spinning beneath me, "he will use Maya as leverage to force me to drop the criminal hit-and-run charges against him and release his frozen millions."

"Exactly," Marcus confirmed. "He doesn't want the baby. He wants his money, his freedom, and his vengeance. But to pull this off, he needs Chloe to stick to the script. Chloe is the cornerstone of their entire gambit."

Suddenly, my private phone vibrated on the polished wood. A text message from an unknown burner number flashed onto the screen:

*He has my sister. He told me if I don't sign the board petition, his loan sharks will visit her dorm in Evanston. Meet me at the underground loading dock behind St. Jude’s clinic in twenty minutes. Alone. Or Maya is next.*

Julian saw the blood drain from my face. "Lauren? What is it?"

I slid the phone across the table. Both brothers read the text in stunned silence. Marcus immediately shook his head. "No. Absolutely not. It’s a setup. You don't meet an unstable witness in an unmonitored loading dock at midnight while an active custody suit is pending."

"Look at the phrasing, Marcus," I said, rising to my feet, adrenaline surging through my veins like pure electricity. "Richard didn't just pay Chloe off. He is blackmailing her. He is using offshore creditors to terrorize her family. If Chloe recants her affidavit before the hearing, Richard’s entire emergency filing collapses into fraud."

"I’m coming with you," Julian said instantly, grabbing his coat.

"No," I insisted, looking Julian directly in his warm gray eyes. "If Richard’s private investigator snaps a photo of you escorting me to an off-the-books rendezvous with the opposing witness, they will claim witness tampering and intimidation. You are the chief of pediatric surgery and my primary character witness. You cannot be compromised."

Julian caught my wrist. His grip was firm, warm, and filled with an intensity that sent a tremor through my chest. "Then I’m driving the trailing car. I will park two blocks away with my engine running. You take one step into danger, Lauren, and I don't give a damn about legal decorum—I will tear the roof off that alley."

I swallowed the lump in my throat, nodding once. "Twenty minutes."

The rain broke over the city in violent sheets as my SUV pulled into the dark service alley behind St. Jude’s clinic. The alley was choked with industrial dumpsters, yellow sodium vapor lights flickering against rain-slicked brick. Through the deluge, I saw a frail figure huddled beneath the dripping corrugated awning of the loading dock, wearing an oversized trench coat and a baseball cap pulled low.

I stepped out of the vehicle, the cold downpour soaking through my wool coat in seconds. "Chloe?"

The figure turned. Chloe looked half the size she had been months ago. Her face was pale, sunken, and a dark, mottled bruise bloomed across her left cheekbone. When she saw me, her knees buckled, and she fell against the cold brick wall.

"He’s insane, Lauren," she sobbed, rain mixing with her tears. "He told me he’d kill my sister. He made me sign papers I didn't even read!"
