Chapter 26 - The Unraveling Web

The next seventy-two hours felt like a surreal surgical procedure where the diseased tissue of the entire city was methodically cut away.
Richard’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands weren't just frozen; they were seized by the federal government under the RICO Act. Richard himself sat in a solitary confinement cell at Metropolitan Correctional Center, awaiting charges of attempted murder, bio-terrorism, and high treason.
I went to see him.
The visitor’s room was cold, divided by a thick pane of bulletproof Plexiglas. Richard looked like a corpse that had forgotten to lie down. His tailored suits were gone, replaced by an ill-fitting orange jumpsuit. His manicured hands were raw, his eyes sunken and yellowed from sleeplessness.
When he looked at me, he didn't see the compliant, soft-spoken wife who used to leave warm dinners for him after eighteen-hour shifts. He saw the woman who had dismantled his empire with a scalpel and cold nerve.
"You took everything," Richard rasped, pressing his trembling hands against the glass. "You took the accounts. You turned the board against me. You even kept the brat that isn't even mine."
"She was never yours, Richard," I said, my voice steady, cold, and absolute. "You were just a pawn who thought he was a king. You traded your soul to the Sovereign Council for fifty million dollars in a blind trust, and they were going to put a bullet in your head the moment the child matured."
Richard’s face twitched. "You think you won, Lauren? You think Julian Vance can protect you? Bell was just a branch. The Sovereign Council isn't a company. It’s an ideology. They own senators. They own pharmaceutical conglomerates across Geneva and Singapore. They know what Maya carries in her marrow. They will never stop hunting you."
"Let them come," I replied, standing up and buttoning my dark woolen coat. "I am a trauma surgeon, Richard. I spend every day pulling beating hearts back from the grave. If they come for my child, I won't just protect her. I will dissect every single one of them until there is nothing left to bury."

I turned my back on him and walked out into the cold corridor, ignoring the desperate, frantic pounding of his fists against the glass behind me.
