Chapter 17 - The Tarmac Stand-off

The wind whipped rain into my eyes, but I didn't blink. I walked slowly up the wet steel steps of the jet, one agonizing step at a time, keeping my hands empty and raised at chest height.

"Richard, look at Maya," I said, my voice cutting through the mechanical howl of the idling jet engines. "Look at her face. She has your mother’s chin. She has the exact shape of your eyes. She is not a bargaining chip. She is not an asset in a bankruptcy settlement. She is a baby."

"She is my leverage!" Richard shrieked, his arm shaking as the revolver waved wildly between my chest and the open tarmac below. "You took everything from me! You took my department! You took my reputation! You turned Chloe against me! You made me a criminal!"

"You made yourself a criminal the night you abandoned your pregnant wife to bleed to death on an emergency room floor," Julian’s voice rang out from the bottom of the stairs. Julian stood at the foot of the gantry, utterly exposed, his eyes locked onto Richard’s gun with absolute, fearless defiance. "Every choice you made, Richard, you made out of cowardice. And right now, you are thirty seconds away from adding capital murder to your indictment."

From the edge of the airfield, the shrill wail of dozens of sirens tore through the storm. Four tactical assault vehicles belonging to the FBI and the Indiana State Police crashed through the torn perimeter fence, followed by three Cook County patrol cruisers. High-powered spotlights ignited from the roofs of the armored vehicles, bathing Richard, Maya, and me in an unforgiving, blinding white glare.

"FBI! Drop your weapon! Drop the weapon and step away from the child!" the megaphone boomed across the tarmac.

Richard’s eyes darted frantically across the perimeter. Snipers in tactical gear were deploying behind the armored doors of the cruisers, laser sights painting crimson dots across the fuselage of the aircraft.

"It’s over, Richard," I whispered, reaching the top platform, standing just three feet away from him. "Give me my daughter."

"No... no, no, no!" Richard screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger of the revolver. He raised the barrel, aiming it directly between my eyes. "If I’m going to prison for the rest of my life, Lauren, you're not going home to live happily ever after with him!"

*Crack!*

A gunshot exploded into the storm.

I lunged forward with everything I had. But the bullet hadn't come from Richard’s gun. A sniper’s round from the tactical perimeter had shattered Richard’s right shoulder.

Richard shrieked in agony, dropping the revolver, his balance failing as he stumbled backward toward the open cabin threshold. The infant car seat slipped from his bloody left hand, tipping toward the edge of the platform ten feet above the hard concrete tarmac.

"Maya!" I screamed.

I threw my entire body onto the wet aluminum plating, sliding on my knees, my arms extending into empty space. My fingers caught the nylon safety handle of the car seat two inches before it plunged over the side.

With a primal scream that tore my lungs, I dragged the seat back onto the steel platform, pulling Maya into my chest and curling my body over her like an armored shell. Maya shrieked in terror, her tiny hands clutching my soaked scrub top, but she was untouched. She was alive. She was in my arms.

Below me, Richard lay pinned against the cabin floor, groaning in agony as tactical agents swarmed up the stairs, zip-tying his wrists behind his back while paramedics rushed forward with trauma shears.

Julian bounded up the steps three at a time. He collapsed onto his knees beside me, his long arms wrapping around both Maya and me, pulling us tightly into his chest. His heart was hammering against my cheek, his breath ragged and warm against my rain-soaked hair.

"You have her," Julian choked out, his voice breaking with raw, overwhelming emotion. "You saved her, Lauren. She’s safe."

May you like

I buried my face in Maya’s neck, the scent of baby powder and rain washing away the nightmare of the last twelve months. I looked up at Julian, seeing tears mixing with the rain on his cheeks. For the first time since this horror began, the iron fist squeezing my heart finally let go.
