Chapter 16 - Thirty Thousand Feet of Hell

"Richard, look at me," I said, my voice deadened of all panic, replaced by the terrifying, chilling precision of a trauma surgeon holding a scalpel over an exposed carotid. "Listen to the words coming out of my mouth. You step onto that runway with my daughter, and you will not leave this continent alive."
Richard let out an arrogant, dismissive scoff, adjusting the collar of his fresh shirt. "Always the drama queen, Dr. Kelly. You think the Chicago police have jurisdiction in an unincorporated private hangar in Lake County? Apex Sovereign owns this airfield. They own the charter company. In twelve minutes, this Gulfstream takes off for Morocco, with a final destination in the United Arab Emirates. Maya will be raised in a private villa with nannies who don't spend ninety hours a week cutting open gunshot victims."
"You idiot!" I shouted, the fury tearing through my throat. "You think Apex Sovereign is saving you? Chloe woke up, Richard! She told us everything! She told us about the eight-million-dollar defaulted loan! You think they’re flying you to safety? They are flying you over international waters to throw you out of the cargo hatch so your frozen marital estate automatically liquidates to settle the debt!"
For a fraction of a second, a flicker of sheer, paralyzing panic rippled through Richard’s eyes. He looked up toward the cockpit door, his knuckles turning pale against his scotch glass. But his megalomania, fueled by years of unearned privilege and narcissistic decay, instantly slammed the door shut on reason.
"Nice try, Lauren. Always trying to play the smarter surgeon in the room. But you're too late. The engines are spooling up."
The screen abruptly went black.
"Julian! How far?" I screamed, slamming my fist against the dashboard.
"Two miles to the Gary industrial perimeter!" Julian roared, dodging between two eighteen-wheelers on the rain-swept highway. "Marcus just alerted the Federal Aviation Administration! They’re initiating an emergency ground stop on the regional airspace, but if that jet taxis onto the tarmac before the federal marshals arrive, the tower won't be able to stop them from taking off manually!"
Up ahead, through the curtain of heavy gray rain, the chain-link perimeter of the Gary Executive Airfield materialized. A private twin-engine Gulfstream was already rolling out from a secluded hangar, its jet turbines whining with an ear-splitting, high-pitched scream as it turned toward the head of the main runway.
"Hold on!" Julian yelled.
Julian didn't look for an open security gate. He aimed the heavy Audi straight at the padlocked chain-link perimeter fence, bracing for impact.
The car smashed through the metal fencing with an explosion of sparks and tearing wire. The vehicle fishtailed violently across the slick grass verge before slamming down onto the active tarmac, the high-performance tires gripping the wet asphalt as Julian accelerated directly across the runway, positioning our vehicle squarely in the takeoff path of the advancing jet.
The massive aircraft loomed in front of us like an aluminum leviathan, its blinding landing lights illuminating the torrential rain. The pilot inside the cockpit saw our car blocking the center line and slammed on the emergency reverse thrusters. The jet’s tires screeched against the runway, burning rubber sending acrid white smoke into the rain as the plane shuddered to an aggressive, violent halt thirty yards from our front bumper.
"Stay behind me!" Julian ordered, kicking his door open.
I didn't listen. I leaped out into the storm, sprinting across the soaked tarmac toward the main boarding stairs of the jet, my surgical scrubs flapping in the turbine backdraft.
The jet's hydraulic cabin door unsealed, hissing open as the stairs descended. Richard stepped onto the platform, his face twisted in a rabid, cornered fury. In his left arm, he clutched Maya’s car seat; in his right hand, he raised a heavy, black snub-nosed revolver.

"Get back!" Richard screamed into the roar of the engines. "Get back, or I swear to God I’ll drop her onto the concrete!"
